Thanks ------------------------- I was watching Maternity Ward a way while back... and I saw them use Forceps on a few babys.... It looked like the Dr was pop that baby's head clean off!! Guest guest
I get asked this question in my childbirth classes a lot...and I've seen both used. when I'm asked, " Which would you prefer the doctor to use? " My response is always, " Whichever the doctor usually uses. " The main dangers of each are almost completely due to physician misuse or inexperience....when used properly, both are relatively safe. If I had a doctor that was used to using forceps and that's what s/he'd been using for the last 15 years of their practice....I wouldn't want him/her using a vacuum extractor on my baby, I'd want him/her to use the forceps that they are experienced in using... same goes for vice versa...if the physician was used to vacuum extractors...I wouldn't want them to try forceps on me. I'd want them to use that which they have the most experience and expertise...THAT is what reduces the risk at that point more than ANY other factor!! They both just seem too brutal. > After seventeen hours of INDUCED labor and two hours of pushing, my doctor used forceps to deliver my first baby. He didn't give me a choice of forceps or vacuum, so I assumed that he was more comfortable with the forceps, which was fine with me. I just wanted the baby OUT. My baby had a couple of little scratches from the forceps, but they were gone within days and had no long term effects.
