All my doctors say that a WLS patient should be taking 1000mg of Calcium

Citrate a day. Calcium carbonate either isn't as good or isn't absorbed as

well

as Citrate. I take four Citracal a day..

Dianne,

I initially was not taking any calcium supplement whatsoever, not even

prior to my pregnancy. When I as admitted for complications with my

pregnancy around 29 weeks a nutritionist saw my in the hospital. She was

shocked and said I should be taking at least 1000mg of calcium a day

even when I wasn't pregnant due to the surgery. So, immediately after I

was discharged I started taking Viactiv 3 times a day. I still take it

now even after

Just thought I would throw my 0.02 in there as well. I was taking calcium

carbonate and ended up with calcium kidney stones because the calcium that is

not absorbed from the carbonate has to go somewhere!! Let me tell you THAT

has not been fun, once you start with stones, apparently they don't stop.

Take my word for it (or research it for yourself), do not use TUMS,

VIACTIVE, or any of the other calcium carbonate supplements. First off, you

will

have bone problems sooner than later, second you may develop the painful kidney

stones from hell (which in my opinion is nearly a fate worse than death!!)!!

Yes they are easier, taste better, more readily available and

cheaper......but they are not worth the risk you are taking to your long-term

health with

osteoporosis, etc.

If taking large pills is a problem for you, calcium citrate does come in

chewables, they are just not as easy to find. Bariactric Advantage sells

chewable citrate in about 3 different flavors. Twin Labs also sells chewable

citrate in some health food stores, you just have to look around.

Take care,
