Guest guest
Listen up people!!! I am not a new member. I have been a member on here for a long time under a previous e-mail address and since January at ckelley100@.... I don't post because I have not had a reason to before and because I prefer the www.gfcfdiet.com message board. For quite some time the members there have been communicating with Devin Houston, Ph.D. We have been waiting for his new enzymes anxiously. Apparently, very few people cross over between this board and the gfcfdiet board, so you all have not had the pleasure of having countless biochemistry questions answered by Devin. I decided to respond to someone's question about enzymes because it was apparent to me that this board was not aware of the new Houston enzymes. Why in the world would anyone with a conscience not let you know about this? When someone on the other board asked about zinc, I posted that zinc seemed to help my son. When I posted a question about the side effects of vitamin C, someone there let me know that if given at night, it can cause wetting. I was just answering a post about enzymes here. I am a cautious person and probably would not be rushing to try the Houston enzymes if I hadn't been a member of the other board for the last year. I invited Devin Houston to speak at one of the parent support groups I am in and that further convinced me to try the enzymes. I printed off information from Devin's website and delivered them to my pediatrician. She sent a directive to the school concerning administering the enzymes. So you see, I did not just order something off the internet on a whim. Who am I? I am a mother of an almost eight-year-old who has been gfcf, corn-free, soy-free, egg-free, nut-free, phenol-free and so on for one year. If you were at the Kansas City conference, you may have picked up our personal story which was printed and distributed by Beth Bowers, one of the speakers and sponsers of the conference along with Dr. Shaw. Dr. Shaw and Beth know me. If you received a flyer for their Denver conference, the endorsement on the back is from me. I am a huge supporter of Beth Bowers. I heard about the diet first from the Parents magazine article, then went to one of Beth's parent classes. I recently sent out notices to many Kansas City area papers about Beth's dietary intervention class. So you see, I am far from knocking this diet! I am involved in two diet support groups here in the Kansas City area. One in Raytown, Missouri, and one in Lenexa, Kansas. My final words about the enzymes: WE ARE ALLOWING MY SON TO ENJOY EVENTS THAT BEFORE BROUGHT STRESS TO HIM. This means he is no longer on the diet 100%, but more like 95% with the aid of enzymes. My son is very high-functioning. He wants to participate in events fully. I can see where parents of young, severely affected children would not want to test the diet, but the diet is especially challenging for parents of older, higher-functioning children. If I see any regression, I will stop using the enzymes. However, my son is taking the enzymes daily regardless of whether he is " cheating " or not and I believe the enzymes are breaking down proteins that I didn't even realize he was sensitive to. Why do I think that? Because his behavior is better than before the diet. The last two weeks, he has played with his younger brother every evening in a way I only dreamed of. Usually, he finds the sound of his brother's voice to be offensive. His little brother used to ask me often, " Why does my brother hate me? " Now they are playing and laughing together in a " normal " way. His eye contact and awareness of subtleties is better, too: it seems " normal " . This better behavior is the part that completely surprised me. Devin had stated the enzymes might help with other proteins, but I didn't believe it until I saw it. I will admit I am scared to take my son off the diet and won't for a very long time. I have decided to let others go that route before me because I don't want to take even one little step backwards. I have been unable to convince an acquaintance of mine to try the diet for her seven-year-old daughter, but she is now considering the enzymes. If the enzymes bring her daughter to the level my son is at, then I will most certainly reconsider the diet. I also don't want to contribute to a possible yeast problem. If you are on a strict Candida diet, you must respect that. With the enzymes, we are having the wetting side effect, but if you go to the www.gfcfdiet.com message board and read through several pages, you will see Devin's explanation and his prediction that the body will adjust over time. If you need information, you can e-mail Devin. His website is at www.houstonni.com; you can send him a message there or he will answer your messages on the www.gfcfdiet.com board. If you read through the many pages, you will see that I have been around for quite some time. One thing about the other board, we have an attitude there that we are all here to help each other, so please don't go there if you do not share that position. You will find me there.
