Guest guest
nne: Hi, my two boys (both nonRSS) started walking with a wide base of support - this is normal development. It was probably a good 2 to 3 months before they began narrowing their base of support; or walking with their feet closer together. In regards to walking on the outside of her foot - is she rolling onto her ankle or just that the outside of her foot is hitting first - and then does the rest of her foot make contact with the floor after the heel strike? I would certainly say that is she is d/c from PT before she started walking - once her base of support has narrowed ( a couple months) her gait should be evaluated by a professional PT. Does Mia have another " re-check " with her PT? I am an OT and once I discharge someone I always have a follow up plan to make certain that progress is continuing and to update the home exercises. If Mia does not have this arranged I would contact the PT and/or the physician and make this request. In the meantime; don't panic - children take a while to get a " normal " walking pattern - even as adults - if you look at the bottom of an old pair of shoes you can see you might favor either the inside or outside of your foot when you walk. For example my shoes are worn on the inside heels. Long answer; hope it helps. Jane, mom to SGA ?RSS 1 year.
Guest guest
Jane, Thanks so much for the reply! Come to think of it, I think I am supposed to f/u with her PT. I will try to make that appt. Mia does not roll so her ankle touches the ground, just her outer edge of her foot. Anyway, I will watch her to see how she progresses! nne In RSS-Support , " loschy@n... Guest guest
Hi nne, She would likely benefit from SMO's (supra malleolar orthotics) - a plastic splint which stops the ankles rolling in or out. They basically stabilize the ankle. They go over socks and shoes fit over them. They are prescribed by an orthopedic specialist and can get made in or outside a hospital. My daughter cannot stand up without them as her ankles give way. Good luck. > Hi everyone, I had a question that may or may not be related to > RSS/SGA. Mia started walking at about 21 months (she is 22 months > now). When I watch her walk she seems to walk on the outer parts of > her feet (like she roll the right one out to the right and the left > one out to the left). She walks with a wide stance too. I thought > that maybe she did that for balance. She was released from PT right > before she started walking so I can't ask her. I notice it much more > when she has no shoes on. Any comments? Thanks!! nne
Guest guest
Hi Guys I have to say that as a mum of three with no physical hurdles in their way. You parents seem to be doing an amazing job with your babies. i have been doing a lot of work lately with infants and massage and have in my care a little girl who is 18 months and due to neglect hasnt ever walked, she had been left in a cot so we had to start from the very beginning with her. She didnt crawl she slid around on the floor on her bottom using her feet to propel her along. I wanted to share this with you because i noticed as i was reading your posts that a few of you seem concerned with trying to get your kids up on two feet. Keira is there now, its taken 6 weeks of daily massage (due to muscles not being stretched and strengthened and set in the sitting position too long) and a minimum of 2 hours a day trying to get her to stand but she is almost there. How i did it was get myself and my son to sit about a meter apart on the floor with our feet joined and creating a circle (for the safety aspect that she feels) We would clap our hands up high so that she had to look up and not down at her feet then we would encourage her by putting our arms out for her and basically getting her to lean or fall into us.. over the weeks this need to lean or to fall in our direction has changed into stepping forward. the clapping distracts her from thinking about falling over and she forgets completely about what she is doing. we have now set the distance further apart and she takes 10 steps .. we do however line the floor with towels to make her feel safter putting her back in a circle but for us it has worked for us.. just thought i would share as it may work for you guys too. Keira loves this game and she gets so excited now when she see's the towels come out that she pulls herself up on the edge of the lounge and waits for me.
