Guest guest
Marla, One of the reasons I wanted a definitive diagnosis was for my daughter. She is only 30, married, and was considering having children. Since the family diagnosis of MELAS she is seriously questioning such an option as the disease is tranmitted maternally. The second problem is that a study has shown that the per cent heteroplasmy varies from oocyte to oocyte within the same individual. My own diagnosis was also useful in pinpointing the problems occurring with my brother. It was a simple matter of getting my results and focusing in on that for his diagnosis. Although the percent heteroplasmy in each of us is 10 per cent or less, the clinical signs and course of the disease has been variable for each of us. It simply depends on the tissues affected. a
