Guest guest
Hello everyone, How ironic that the topic of late is RSV. has been in the hospital with it since Sunday night. He started with a bad cough last Tuesday. I took him to E/R Wednesday night and the doctor (who of course was unfamiliar with RSS kids and also for some reason told me he wasn't a father?) said " oh, it's just a virus...there's nothing we can do, just give him pediacare. " He didn't mention RSV or anything. He said his lungs were clear, even though I heard constant wheezing. Then Thursday my husband took in for an already scheduled routine appt. with his regular ped. Despite 's awful cough and congestion he told my husband the same thing...continue pediacare and use a humidifer. He told him to watch out for RSV, since the season was on. Saturday I noticed he was just not getting better...so back to the doctor we went. This time we saw a different ped who was on duty and he diagnosed with an ear infection and prescribed amoxicillin. For the first time this doctor mentioned his lungs sounded congested...but no mention of RSV. By now was not eating because every time he coughed he couldn't breathe. I told the doctor I was worried about him not eating and he said the pediacare sometimes supresses the appetite, so give it to him only at night. We were sent on our way again. By Sunday, looked so pale...his cough was constant and he was so lethargic, he seemed half dead (i hate to use those words, but this is literally how he seemed). All he did was sleep all day - in between coughing. I started to worry about his blood sugar (which I have been errant in checking before) and hypoglycemia. I also knew he was not getting any better. I phoned another local RSS mom (thanks Cindy!) and she was concerned for him too. I finally decided we'd have to go back to the E/R (4th time to see a doctor!). This time they had a ped come to see him and she diagnosed him with brochiolitis and had him tested for RSV. He was admitted on the spot. They gave him an IV (***whole different story here! It took them at least 5 times to get one started, my poor baby!!!***) and started breathing treatments. He was put on oxygen as well. I had them check his blood sugar, but it was 130 which I understand is okay? But that was already after he was on the IV. Anyway, trying to make a long story short here without any luck...just wanted to acknowlege 's warning that YES you all need to watch out for this thing...it is really rough on our little ones. I had no idea about any vaccine or anything and I'm pretty upset about that. In fact, I am pretty upset in general about how hard it is to get the proper care for any of 's problems. This is the only place I learn anything and it's hard to communicate my concerns to these " professionals " to get them to understand what I'm dealing with. They are so naive about everything!! Well, I'm venting. Thanks to all of you for sharing and constant support and encouragement (big hugs to Jodi R, Cindy G and Pat). I'm only home for a short while to shower/change then I'm back to the hospital to relieve my mom. Being in the hospital has been mentally and emotionally draining! I hope will be home soon, but on the other hand, I'm worried that he will be sent home TOO soon...? He's still having problems without the oxygen (they removed his canula yesterday) and he is still very, very congested (esp. in the morning). I don't know if I will feel comfortable if the doctor's send us home and he still has symptoms...? Anyway, sorry for the very long message but this was the perfect opportunity for me to post. Hope you are all doing well with your precious angels. Mom to (7 months, 8 lbs. 3 oz (down from 8 lbs 14 oz) and 23 inches
