I brought my grandson home to live with me because he was not doing well with

his new step-father or at school. After waiting a school quarter to see if a

more stable home life made a difference we could see on his report card that he

needed something like Ritalin. It helped his concentration and he did well with

it for about 18 months. Then he started to go out of control. I also read up

on Adderall and liked what I read. He has no been on Adderall for the past two

years and now his 4 yo half-brother is also on it. Both are better able to

concentrate on it. I also do not see the problems coming 'down off' the

Adderall that I saw on the Ritalin during the afternoon.

My biggest worry now is that these meds can be trouble if there is bipolar to be

worried about. NOW I find this out. The older boy is now on Paxil for

depression (in a 9 yo) We just found out that if he misses a dose of his Paxil

that he is out of control. Maybe if he had been on the Paxil before he got

expelled for his behavior, he would have been more in control of himself and his

emotions.

If you have a choice between the two meds, my personal opinion is to go with the

Adderall. Coming down off the Ritalin in the afternoons left full of

fight and anger and bawling to get what he wanted. That may have been the

depression but we did not see it with the Adderall like we did with the Ritalin.

I have a friend who also switched her son for the same reasons.

My 5 year old ADHD, PDD NOS son was put on Ritalin. He was on it for a month.

I didn't see any improvement the first week, but after that he started to do

extremely well. On the next visit I asked the Dr to prescribe him Adderall,

because I like the fact that he doesn't need to take it twice a day. The

first week was hard too, but now is doing really well, sleeps through the

nite (he started that on Ritalin, and he didn't sleep through the nite in

years).

He is also so much more verbal because now instead using his energy on

screaming and shaking and kicking he tries more to express himself verbally.

I don't know on which medication should I keep him. They both seem to be

working well on him. Anyone else has an experience with these 2 medications?

TIA,
