Guest guest
Hi -- I am a long time lurker of this group and have learned quite a bit from all of you. Recently I had a question that I can't seem to find an answer to anywhere else. I figured this would be a very good place to look for an answer. I am almost 15 months out from WLS. I have lost 150 pounds and although I have another 30 or so to lose my husband and I have decided to try to start a family. I have permission from my surgeon - - so no worries on that front. But -- here's my question -- are protein shakes safe during pregnancy? I generally drink 1-2 shakes per day, I feel better having that jump start on my protein count for the day. What I have heard is that getting protein from supplements can be dangerous to the fetus because you get it in an unbalanced way -- rather than from food. I was hoping that maybe some of you have asked this question of your OB's and knew if it is dangerous. I just recently finished my last pack of BCP and will start TTC in the next couple of months. I want to be as informed as possible before becoming pregnant. Thank you for your help! Dara Open RNY 3/5/03 330/180/
Guest guest
Dara, Whoever told you this about protein shakes couldn't be MORE wrong. Whey shakes have ALL of the amino acids, including the essential and " non-essential " ones, in the correct ratios. My midwife told me that if and when I get pregnant again, that she wants me to DOUBLE my protein shake intake; protein is absolutely essential to the growing placenta, increased blood supply, and the growing embryo/fetus. While there are many shake choices out there, during pregnancy especially you want to use one that has carbs and some fat... more like Champion Whey Stack than Nectar. If you are consuming many shakes a day and not so much food, it's easy to have a lower fat and carb intake than you need while pregnant. Finally, ignore the " eating for two " myth. You need 300-500 extra calories a day and about 1000 mg a day extra calcium citrate (balanced out with an extra 500 mg a day of magnesium). You might also need more iron and Vitamin B-12, but only your blood test results can reveal your needs for those things. Guest guest
Hi Dara, I still start every morning with a protein shake (I'm 28 weeks along with twins and 16+ months post WLS) and my OB encourages this practice. For one thing, I seem to have to " prime " my pouch in the morning before it will accept solid foods and the shake helps prep me for a full day of eating, yippeeeee!!! My hubby will make my shake as I'm on my way out the door then I will drink it during my commute. About an hour after I get to work I will eat something solid, usually cheese, boiled egg, toast with peanut butter, etc. Because I can only ingest so much food at one time, I eat small protein/carb mini-meals 4-5 times a day. I have gained very little pregnancy weight even though I am carrying twins and started out at 157 lbs, but yet the babies are growing really well and my blood levels (with the exception of iron, which I've had lifelong troubles with) are staying within healthy limits. Now that the babies are at the stage where they are developing more fat and muscle tissue, my OB has suggested I try to get a second protein shake in sometime in the evenings, since they need a lot of protein to help them grow at this stage. He has told me that I should NOT substitute eating for drinking shakes, I need to continue to add them as SUPPLEMENTS and NOT replacements. Good luck and as long as you remember to supplement and not replace, you should be fine with the shakes. Toi
Guest guest
I remember also being encouraged to keep up the protein shakes during my post-WLS pregnancy five years ago. The one caution I was given was by a nurse, who reminded me that pregnancy tends to be somewhat hard on the kidneys anyway, and to make sure that I got plenty of fluids along with the protein shakes so that it wouldn't cause my kidneys to stress out. -Kris Wood > Now that the babies are at the stage where they are developing more > fat and muscle tissue, my OB has suggested I try to get a second > protein shake in sometime in the evenings, since they need a lot of > protein to help them grow at this stage. Guest guest
I believe that alot of the women here still drink protein shakes. I have never stomached them so I am not really sure. I would call your doc and ask what they think if you do not get a reply on the group or maybe web search protein drinks and pregnancy and see if you can find anything. good luck TTC God Bless, Robin, NorthEastern, NY Age- 41 EDD- July 27th, 2004 IT'S A BOY!!!!!!
