Guest guest
If anyone is interested, here are a couple of links relating to " cause " of stroke-like events. http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/ben/cnr/2005/00000002/00000001/art0000 5 Pathogenesis of Stroke-Like Episodes in MELAS: Analysis of Neurovascular Cellular Mechanisms No doubt this link is long enough to be truncated in cyberspace, so you may have to cut and paste both parts. The abstract is very technical, but if you have a medical dictionary handy, it may make some sense. http://www.cdgs.com/_faq.html (scroll down to SLE section) This one is about SLEs in relation to a non-mito disorder of carbohydrate metabolism, which is interesting because I was under the impression that SLEs were primarily associated with certain kinds of mitochondrial disorders. I did not know they were typical occurrences in some non-mito metabolic disorders. One personal comment. My SLEs always involve garbled speech and serious (but temporary) loss of cognitive function, in addition to sudden, extreme weakness (totally unable to walk). Speech and cognitive function recover in 8-10 hours with lots of fluids/calories but the weakness takes many weeks-to-months, and sometimes is not fully recovered, especially when the SLEs are piggy-backed, one after the other. For me, TPN and/or 24-hour tube feeding has almost completely resolved the SLEs, which were occurring more and more frequently. The last week before my tube was placed I had three major SLEs. Constant calories are the key for me, though I'm not sure I've heard of anyone else where calories make such an obvious difference in SLEs. It makes sense, though, the brain running out of energy. I've only had one SLE since I've had the tube (2+ years) and that was set off by a kidney " confusion " due to blocked ureter---a dime-sized kidney stone.
