Hi everybody!

I've posted a time or two in the recent past, but since I have

officially sent in my PI form and am actively pursueing the MBG, I

thought I should officially introduce myself.

My name is Debbie and I live just north of Richmond, VA. I am an RN

turned nail technician due to burn out. I am 45 years old, married

and have 2 wonderful (most of the time) kids. My bmi is 53, and I've

been overweight all my life.

I can remember working in the emergency room at Medical College of

Virginia back in the mid-80's, and taking care of gastric bypass

patients who were very sick. VERY sick. I thought to myself, wow,

I'd have to be really desperate to go this route. Well, I'm

desperate. I'm tired of not being able to enjoy life with my

soul-mate and my kids. Life passes by as I sit and watch. My time

is

here. I've been researching WLS for several months. After being

denied for open RNY due to a written exclusion, I found Dr. R's site.

Being a nurse, I guess I'm a bit of a hard-sell. It took a lot of

reading and talking before I decided this surgery was not just too

good to be true, but was true. I attended Amy's support group a

couple of weeks ago, and made my final decision. Now, I'm

resubmitting for the MGB. If worse comes to worse, we will self-pay.

But I will fight first.

I am convinced that the MGB is the cutting edge of WLS. Dr. R's

statistics speak for themselves. I am very glad at how open Dr. R is

about his technique and any problems there have been. The medical

community will come along in due time. He has planted a seed at the

convention. Facts speak for themselves. There doesn't seem to be

anything hidden here. That speaks volumes in itself.

My husband and I are taking advantage of the kids going to camp next

week, and going to Durham to lurk at the clinic Tuesday. I'm looking

forward to talking to more post-ops. I know that very soon I'll be

on

the other side too.

I appreciate everyone's openness on this list, and the encouraging

posts. God's timing is indeed good! :-)

ex-lurker,

Debbie in VA

Debbie,

It was good to read your post. I also am a RN. Just today I recovered a

lady who had the open RNY. I am so happy I made the decision to have the

MGB. I am having mine July 19th. I have researched WLS many years. I worked

in an ER for 10 years and have treated some people who have had

complications from WLS but I am like you I have to have it done. I believe

Dr rutledge is exploring new horizons in WLS. I know there are many RNs who

have had this surgey done. Good luck on your journey .

Durham bound

soon,

Kim

Hi Debbie,

I am one of Dr. R's patients. I had my MGB on 5/29/00. I have been

doing fine since then. I have had times when I ate too fast or too much and

boy did I feel rotten. But, I'm taking it a day at a time while I learn

what I can and can't eat. I am almost 6 weeks postop and have lost 32 lbs.

This was a drastic decision for me because I too was against wls. But, I am

42 and have spent most of my life being fat. I saw relatives of mine

popping pills for high bp and taking insulin for diabetes. I thought, Is

this how I want to live my life? I decided that going under the knife and

making myself change my habits would be easier than living a miserable life

with pills and shots. It has not all been easy, and I won't lie. I didn't

get this overweight by just eating sweets. I was a large quantity eater. I

mostly ate good foods, but just way too much. I couldn't ever get full.

Now, however, I can get full on much less than before and it feels good to

see the weight fall off. I do have a hard time reminding myself to take all

my vitamins, but I am trying!! I live in Virginia just down the road from

you. I live in Gloucester County. Feel free to ask me anything!!

Sincerely,

Sandy from VA

Good for you, Debbie. I hope you get approval from your insurance.

I sent in my Patient Info yesterday and got back Dr. R's insurance

letter today -- so things are moving along! Amy's get together was

productive :-).

Debbie,

Congratulations on your decision. I felt the same way, If I had to I would

self pay but this group gave me the courage to fight for it first. I did

and the insurance co. paid. What you saw as post-op will probably not be

what you experience. Unless God forbid you have a complication. Anyway

there is some pain at first but it quickly goes away and it is surprising

how quickly you can get up and get around. The worst part in my opinion

was getting myself together from the anesthesia. You will usually be happy

about your decision. My surgery was 6-2-00 and I have had a few days when I

would have liked to have eaten more than I was capable of eating. Today we

had a farewell party for a coworker and I thought, so much food and so

little place to put it. But I was 300+ and have lost about 25 pounds and am

being told how THIN I look. I keep telling them I have a LONG way to go. I

never expected to be called thin and certainly not at this wt. Good Luck

and you will enjoy clinic.
