Guest guest
Rats! After comeing back from pre-school Ella was crying in pain and pulling on her ear. We went to the Dr. Since it is Friday and explained to him about Ella's SCDiet. We picked up some Anti-biotics just in case but really don't want to use them given her great progress over the last several months. We are giveing her Oregon's Wild Harvest Children's formula Ear Drops which contain Fresh Oranic Garlic bulb, Fresh St. 's Wort Flower buds and Mullein flouwers in a base of organice unrefined olive oil, natural vitamin E oil and grapefruit seed extract. Ear infections are painful and I'm wondering what would be a good way of reducing the pain and keeping her calm? Thanks for any suggestions. Brent Father Ella Crohns 4yrs old SCD 5months. Guest guest
Hi Brent...poor Ella. I'm not sure if you are open to using homeopathic remedies, but homeopathic Belladonna, Chamomilla and Pulsatilla are all indicated for painful earaches. You would want a 30ch strength, and give it every 3 to 6 hours for 2 or 3 days, until symptoms subside. This combined with what you are doing should help. There is a product called Rescue Remedy, that can be calming for most kids, but it won't address the pain. You obviously have a health food store available to you, since you are using the ear drops, and they should be able to direct you further. I remember years ago, before i gave up dairy, i had horrible ear infections and heat could sometimes help, usually lying on a heat source....the counter pressure seems to help with the pain as well. Good luck! cindy
Guest guest
Hi, first i wanted to thank you for all your advice earlier!!! Thank you for taking the time. I wanted to say thatI used to get chronic ear infections and I mean all the time!!!This was only after I started seeing symptoms of the UC, maybe it has to do with the immune system problems in uc/chrons- i don't know. I keep water out of my ears with ear plugs when i am in the shower and i don't have problems now. I know this doesn't help right now with Ella, but personally I used to sit in super hot baths, keeping water out of the ear of course...i know this sounds crazy, but something was soothing with the steam, or maybe it just took my mind off it, don't know. Hope she gets better soon!!! candice uc since 99/scd 1 wk
Guest guest
For pain, I think Tylenol is the choice for non-ASD kids. Is there a compounding pharmacy in your area? I would take the prescription there to have it filled with NO illegals. Also, I would have the Tylenol compounded there as well. That way you won't be giving her illegals. Some S. Boulardii and extra yogurt would be good too to keep the yeast and pathogenic bacteria at bay if you end up needing to use the antibiotics. With 's last ear infection, our doctor did not treat it, but had us use Lauricidin. It went away without antibiotics. I don't know how quickly you could get the Lauricidin though. Guest guest
The ear drops seem to be relieveing much of the pain from earlier or she's exhausted her poor self. Thank you I will look into this further. I certainly don't want to go the anti biotic route. Brent > > Hi Brent...poor Ella. Guest guest
THank you Jody! I may get some of this made up for future use . The drops seem to be working well. Guest guest
Just one mom talking to another....I think I may be jumping in late in the ear conversation...but thought I would add. Our son had countless ear infections....until we took all dairy out of his diet. I have discovered that many children with ear infections (pediatrician told us) have an allergy or intolerance to dairy! That the two are very CLOSELY related (scary in light of too many doctors thinking that it is just part of childhood, when it doesn't have to be this way!). Food allergy/sensitivity of any kind can cause ear infections in our little people. Especially when it causes high secretions of mucous/not only in the Eustachian tubes (ears, which make environment for infection to grow). Also this same mucous is increased at the same time in our guts, causing malabsorption (Elaine even made this mucous connection in our guts.) Food for thought. Warm Regards, Antoinette (Day 33 entire family SCD/Celiac, neurological probs related to leaky gut, and many sensitivities and allergies), Re: Ella has an Ear Infection. Recommendations for Pain? THank you Jody! I may get some of this made up for future use . The drops seem to be working well. Guest guest
Lauricidin is not prescription. It can be ordered on the internet. I believe it's: http://www.lauricidin.com Jody mom to -7 and -9 SCD 1/
Guest guest
This stuff is GREAT! Other sources of monolaurin are NOT the same. This is the only brand recommended by Dr. McCandless for kids with viral issues. Taking it can be a bit of a challenge for little ones though. It comes in tiny little waxy pellets with a soapy taste. You do NOT want to chew them. Best bet is to mix it in a puree or pearsauce and hope they swallow without chewing. We did this for 3 days with Tom, but he was doing so well with them that we just started giving him the plain pellets in his hand. I have to brag- he swallows them down neat! We call them " magic medicine pellets " . This kid loves to take his medicine. Go figure ... You may have a resurgence of viral activity and feel poorly for the first few days of taking them. Start with a small dose and increase over a week to full dose. I felt a little achy and headachy, but felt much better after that was over. Guest guest
Lauricidin is an antifungal, antibacterial , antiviral supplement. Our MD told us to use it insted of valtrex. Guest guest
She fell asleep on the way back from the Doctor's office around 3pm and pretty much slept most the the afternoon and night. We gaver her ear drops from Oregon Harvest recommened by Gertrude Snicklegrove (Summer) at 3pm then again at 10pm and once more this morning. The pain was gone. She still sniffling and has a bit of a cough. I'm totally suprised the night wasn't one from Heck! She was up drinking juice/water mix and going pee. Her poop this am was a trophy! And she's been eating pancakes, hamburger, pearsauce, juice/water and her vitamin. So happy now and thankful for all the suggestions here just in case the pain returned. Guest guest
Probably so! Seems to be powerful stuff. Glad she doesn't have to take anti-biotics. Guest guest
Dr. Natasha -McBride's book " Gut and Psychology Syndrome " has a great chapter on ear infections and especially treating them without antibiotics, including info on keeping your child comfortable. Dr. Natasha uses SCD with her patients. Book at www.behealthy.org.uk Warm compresses on the ear help. Also, there are prescription ear drops that numb the ear to control pain. Ask your doc or pharmacist if interested. Kayla >
Guest guest
I also use Belladona, I would give 5 pellots of 30 ch belladona every 15 minutes for until the symptoms subside. Quite often you can see a difference in 3 doses like this. I have never had to give my kids more then 4 15 minutes a part. After that I would continue with 5 pellots every 4 hours. I also like the olive oil and garlic oil you can buy in the health food store. Laurie Re: Ella has an Ear Infection. Recommendations for Pain? Hi Brent...poor Ella.
