Guest guest
My 5 yo Aspergers son has been GFCF for about 5 mos and now SCD for one month. To preface my concern, we had done testing through Great Plains Lab and test results indicated a high level of arabinose (about 4x the normal high range). From what I understand, apple juice is to be avoided as apples are high in arabinose. Here's the problem... yesterday morning, without thinking, I had given him apple juice (from a box - said pure/pasteurized). Within about 15 mins. he complained of a headache. An hour or two later he was lethargic and spacy and laid down for a 2 hr nap (he hasnt taken naps in 6 months). During this time, he had a slightly elevated temp and his heart beat was fast. He did not eat lunch or dinner yesterday. He seemed to feel better after the nap and became more lively and interactive. A headache came on again (also said nose was bothering him) and he went to bed 2 hrs early. This morning he woke up saying he felt better and acted normally throughout the morning. By lunchtime, same issues surfaced. He took a 2 hr nap again this evening and went to bed an hour early saying that his eyes and nose were bothering/hurting him. Has anyone heard of this or possibly offer any insight?? I'm not sure if this has anything to do with apple juice but just seemed to come on all of the sudden after ingestion and after having not had apples in 5 mos. Guest guest
Michele, I'm not sure what would cause those symptoms, but you should discontinue apple juice because it is not allowed on SCD. Only apple cider. This time of year it's so hard to know what is causing what. Viruses of all sorts are going around and seasonal allergies begin to hit. I would discontinue any apple product and wait at least 2 weeks or a month before trying it again. And I would definitely make the item yourself (like homemade applesauce). Otherwise it's tough to know what is causing the problem. Jody mom to -7 and -9 SCD 1/
Guest guest
The initial symptoms sound to me like hypoglycemia from the sugar in the juice. That doesn't explain the repeat symptoms, though. I think there's more than one problem happening here. Kayla
