I've been wondering about this. Culturelle comes in two different forms.

The DS form has 10 billion CFUs per capsule and has a base of

microcrystalline cellulose. The HS form has 30 billion CFUs per capsule and

has a base of inulin. I think it may be only recently that two different

forms were introduced. I know the HS would be illegal because of the

inulin. But would the DS form be illegal? If so, why? (In case DS turns

out to be legal -- available at www.culturelle.com or ,

reduced prices for 4 or more cartons.)

Our DAN said that Culturelle has some form of dairy in it. She was

not specific.

Hi ,

The label on my Culturelle box says it contains less than 15 parts per

million, per capsule, of whey and casein. Is that teensy-weensy amount

really a problem, do you know?

Inulin in the culturelle is what makes it SCD illegal. The minute trace

of whey and casein was not an issue for my son when we were just GFCF.

But in terms of SCD, there are other ingredients which make it illegal.

I think they are mostly in the form of illegal strains of probiotics.

Hi Becky,

Well, we're using the inulin-free Culturelle now (DS form; it's the HS form

that has inulin). But I didn't know there was such a thing as illegal

probiotic strains. Can you tell me where to go on the website for info on

this? I already looked at the probiotics legal/illegal list but I don't

remember seeing anything about specific strains being legal or illegal, I

just remember brands being listed.

Keeping even small amounts of illegal whey and casein (they're dairy) in your

child's diet, whether in Culturelle or in a food, is only a problem if you ever

want the SCD to have full benefit to your child, and if you truly desire the

nasty microbes to ever stop plaguing your child's gut. When there are equal or

better alternatives for the SCD follower, why compromise your success, rather

than look into alternatives?

Make sure you are very familiar with BTVC, so that you understand (and are

convicted by!) the reasons you need to remove ALL illegals from your child's

diet, to the best of your ability. It makes all the difference.

Also, we found that all legal supplements were much cheaper than the illegal

supplements we were giving our child pre-SCD. Adding all those yummy-tasting

fillers costs money! We went from spending $200.00 per month on supplements to

about $30.00 per month. And our child improved drastically on them. So, enjoy

the MANY benefits of SCD!!!

I'm pretty new to SCD but I recall that we should only supplement with

Acidophilus for a probiotic. This is one place on the website where it

was mentioned, but this isn't the original reference I recall seeing.

For instance I specifically recall Bifidus being illegal. Where I saw

that I don't recall

Maybe someone else could add to the discussion.

Yoghurt

res.htm> Cultures

" So we stick with Acidophilus in our supplements, and Acidophilus,

Thermophilus and Bulgaricus in our yoghurt, because they are good

neighbours " .

Hi Nannette,

Thanks for your response!

I would like to find an equal or better alternative for Culturelle, and for

Bio-Kult, the 14-species probiotic my daughter is taking (which contains

maltodextrin! argh!). However, when I eliminated Culturelle (and kept

Bio-Kult) at one point, my daughter's gut function clearly deteriorated.

When I put her back on Culturelle, she improved again within 3 days (four

times in her young life I've started this kid on Culturelle, and each time

there's been dramatic improvement within 3 days). Another time I eliminated

Bio-Kult (keeping Culturelle and Saccharomyces Boulardii that time) and her

gut and liver function clearly deteriorated. This was a few months ago, and

while she's improved again since I restarted Bio-Kult, she's not back to

where she was before I eliminated it.

As one of her docs put it " This kid is FRAGILE! " We've started some new

things that should help stabilize her, and maybe when she's more stable I

can try switching her probiotics to legal ones. She appears to really need

a multi-species probiotic which includes bifidus bacteria for Vitamin K

production. I've found one with 6 species but would like to find one with

twelve or fourteen per the advice of one of her most knowledgeable docs.
