<< Loop Gastric Bypass ( " Mini Gastric Bypass " )

This form of Gastric Bypass was developed years ago, and has

generally been abandoned by nearly all bariatric surgeons as unsafe --

several years ago, a consensus of the American Society for Bariatric

Surgery was that the procedure should never be performed.

Although easier to perform than the Roux en-Y, it creates a severe

hazard in the event of any leakage after surgery, and seriously

increases the risk of ulcer formation, and irritation of the stomach

pouch by bile. >>

Just to repeat what Dr. Rutledge said after the Bariatric conference:

" When I said mini gastric bypass, all my fellow bariatric docs heard " loop " .

This is not the old loop bypass. " The old loop bypass never had a

pouch, which the mini gastric does. This pouch protects the esophagus the same

way the RNY pouch protects its' esophagus. The RNY pouch holds 1-2 oz. ,the

mini holds 3-4 oz....not a significant difference, unless your goal is to

scare people into your way of thinking. Look at Dr.R's presentation. Do you

see a high number of complaints of esophagitis? Bile reflux, after the first

month? How many revisions has he had due to Bile reflux or esophagitis? Zero.

He's almost 4 years out with this surgery, I think the data speaks for

itself.

Good job on presenting this info to this board. Absolutely check out

everything you can....especially the facts!

Now I'm really goin' camping, just couldn't enjoy my weekend with that on my

mind!
