Thanks Jeni Lynn for responding. In light of the talk around protein/carb/fat

ratios and that we need to simply feed our kids what they can digest (so

simple), Elijah has spent his first day eating only meats, oils and juice. We

never did a true intro (included pears) and he got severely skinny (some might

remember my posts during that time) and I could see all his stomach muscles and

definition of everything on his biceps, we've always seen ribs. When we started

SCD he wasn't far away from hospitalization, starvation and worse. Everything

was coming out undigested or was eaten by the bad bugs. His tests showed that

out of the all Amino Acids all but one were considered " severely deficient " and

the lonely one was on the low side. He had markers of ketosis and any oils I

fed him came straight out the other side and made him very hyperactive. He

hadn't grown his height in about 6 months and his head circumference was

dropping on the chart. So to go into SCD and have

him lose more weight was scary and I just started throwing foods that were in

stage 1-2 that he had eaten previously with no reaction and weren't a IgG or IgE

allergen, which only left a few foods, into the baby food processor and turn on

the TV to get him to eat. The ones he had an obvious reaction to we certainly

stopped giving, but I was really stuck on giving him a correct ratio. We have

been functioning on a survival mode ever since he was born at 1lb. 9 oz. at 24

weeks. We have nearly lost him so many time. The Lord has exercised us in a

great way. And now I think he's in a place health wise that it is time to move

into a thriving mode! I wasn't problem solving to get him to thrive and I'm

quite sure it would have been to much at the beginning given the circumstances,

but now it's time.

So he was given no " jar " (homemade baby food) today. I did not shovel

anything into his mouth for probably the first day in his life. Don't get the

wrong idea, I always made it fun...take a bite for a push on the swing, watching

TV, listening to favorite music, or when he had a g-tube for a year and he

didn't have to take part. This kind of " eating " has taken up so much of our

days. Sorry for going on but this is a really big step and change to all of our

lives. I am not going to put anything in his mouth any more. He won't eat

fruits and veggies unless he's distracted and doing our routine. I'm sure he

knows better. He has always known better (although crave things would then only

eat a couple bites) and that's why he nearly starved. Ugh! So our first day

eating very low carb was a success and he ate mostly well and to end the day

right before going to bed he had his first solid stool that didn't " explode "

when flushed since SCD. They were all solid (yet

undigested) so it just wasn't a big priority.

Other great news. My husband has decided with Elijah starting back at

the intro he wants to do the diet from the intro with him. I don't know how

much longer I could have watched him pop antacids, take his asthma inhaler all

day, and go get Donuts down at DD! He has a list of foods that he can't eat

without getting heartburn, which he can remember having since age 5. He did SCD

for 2 days, had horrible die-off and intense sugar cravings that he gave into.

I could go on about how much he needs SCD. And he knows it, it's just hard when

your addicted and you don't *really* need to change.

I'm sure we'll have progress to report. We already have a ton even with

having foods he couldn't digest. Because of SCD we can now really look toward

thriving. I am very thankful to Elaine and all who help and encourage on this

list.

Thanks,

Hi !

My kids had a terrible time with carrots as well (cooked, pureed, and all). In

fact, of all the foods, they reacted the worst to this one. We have been SCD

for 4 months, and only now can they tolerate a couple tablespoons of it (peeled,

cooked, pureed). I have read from other sources that carrots are a very starchy

vegetable and cannot be digested very easily by children (regardless of health

status). And I frequently wonder why this is introduced so early in the diet or

why it hasn't been modified for the pecan bread group (since it is geared toward

children). Of the few people that I know personally who do SCD, not one has had

a good experience with peeled, cooked, and pureed carrots in the beginning of

the diet. My opinion is that maybe it should be introduced as a more advanced

food.

Carrots are the culprit. I need help.

I everyone. After 5 months of my son having diarrhea I've finally determined

that carrots, even cooked til very mushy, is causing the problem. He ate

carrots and pretty much everything else he eats and much more legal foods

(fruits) pre SCD and never had diarrhea. He always had 2-3 solid stools that

were not well digested pre SCD. Now, if I feed him carrots he has diarrhea 6-8

times a day. It took me so long to figure it out because he ate carrots almost

everyday pre SCD. Anyways, I need some help to figure out what to feed him.

Right now he eats:

All meats

Ripe banana, pears, and avocado. Apple, peach, and apricot I haven't seen a

reaction but it has been hard to know since he's had diarreha. They might be OK

because other things that bother him he will eat well and then refuse for months

afterward. When the diarrhea fully clears I will have to retest these fruit.

Winter squashes, Zucchini (hates the texture, but will eat if hidden), small

amounts of Broccoli (I'm scared to try to much at once).

He has a hard time with oils. Mainly his fat if from meat and avocado. He

can only tolerate olive oil, grapeseed oil, and avocado oil. I'm going to try

pumpkin seed and sesame seed oil soon.

I usually have him eat a couple veggie bites, then he eats his meat and then

I feed him a pureed veggie usually carrots and avocado or butternut or acorn

squash (since this is all I can find. Spaghetti squash is a no.) with broccoli

or zucchini with some fat.

With no carrots I would mainly be feeding him squash all day everyday for

his carb. He has such a leaky gut (34 foods at last check) so I really want him

on a rotating diet. But how? I'm really mentally stuck on giving him high carb

veggies. I don't know if this is reasonable or not and if I need to let it go.

Any recommendation on a high carb veggie to try or want to set me at ease about

him eating low carb for a little while. With giving him 1 cup carrots, 1 cup

squash, and a banana everyday is the only way he makes it to his required carbs

according to fitday. And he hasn't gained an ounce even since last May! Well

he lost a bunch from May to October (when we started SCD) and has been gaining

it back but none the less has never been higher than what he weighed last May

and he was at the 3rd percentile then. So I'm a little stuck, but I know that

if he is not digesting it than a food that he could digest even in less carb

would still be better. I guess I need

some recommendations and a little pep talk. Thanks.

Dear ,

Good luck to you. Please keep us posted on your progress. I will probably be

joining you in the intro again. I feel like I have lost my bearings (sp?)

somewhat and need to do this over with my kids. I am waiting to finish

introducing their new supplements first. This way I will not get confused as to

whether a supplement or food is causing a reaction.

I am like your husband - I need this diet but had the intense sugar cravings. I

started SCD

in January, stopped it when we went on vacation, started it again in February,

and again

went off it due to the sugar cravings. What helped me was to make a commitment

to my

daughter that we were in this together - she didn't have to be the only one in

the family

going without certain foods because I was going to do it with her. We made a 2

year

commitment to SCD (explaining it as suggested on the pecanbread.com website).

She just

started the SCD on her spring break and that is when I restarted it. It is that

commitment

to my daughter that got me through the worse times.

I found that it helped to keep plenty of meat around to fill up on when the

sugar cravings

strike, because it is so much harder to resist sugar when you are hungry!!
