MAJOR infraction! What to do?

My daughter has been strict SCD for 5 weeks. Her BM's have been

formed and we're making progress. BUT... She just ate 3 containers of

yo-baby yogurt!!! It's about the only illegal I had in the house, and

I only had it because I have a 9 month old. It was in the locked

refrigerator. I didn't know she could work the lock until this

morning. The yogurt has sugar in it, is not home-made, not to mention

the fact that she hasn't had dairy in almost 3 years! What kind of

reaction am I looking at from her? What should I expect? Are we back

to square one here? I'm working so hard to make this work and I'm so

frustrated!

Hi Sharmista, I'm sorry, I don't have any advice on what to expect from

your daughter's infraction. Hopefully, since she's been off dairy for 3

years, her body and brain will be able to handle this relatively well. I

have my fingers crossed for you. I think people sometimes use activated

charcoal for infractions, maybe someone will recommend it and how to use

it, I never have.

I am curious why you would give your 9 month old the yo-baby though? We

were big yo-baby users in our house, I really regret it now. The sugar

in it is likely offsetting the beneficial effects of the probiotics

contained in the yogurt. Have you started making the 24 hr yogurt yet?

That would be a much better option for your baby and would take away the

risk of infractions. We use the goat milk yogurt.

My youngest was 9 months old when his older brother was diagnosed with

ASD. It took me 9 months to decide on a dietary approach (GFCF), when I

did, I put both children on it, it made life much easier. My younger in

NT but has some of the same biological and physiological issue as my

spectrum child. I would recommend any parent of a ASD child put younger

sibling on the same dietary restrictions of the ASD child, for both

prevention and convenience. Of course we have now improved their diets

even further with SCD.

Good luck and hoping your daughter weathers this well.

Sharmista,

If you see regression just go back to the intro diet for a few days and then

carefully

resume at the point you are at and keepus posted on how she reacts.

Becky, thanks for the advice. Hopefully she'll handle it okay. As to

why I buy yo-baby... I want the little one to have yogurt, and I

figured the yo-baby was better, being organic, than the danimals I

gave the other 2 as babies. I guess I never considered that the sugar

would counteract the helpful effects. It's the only source of sugar

she gets. We haven't tried the goat yogurt yet. I wanted to get in

the swing of things first, but I'm thinking about starting it soon. I

still have to order the starter.

You just reminded me, for your non-SCD little girl, you can get the big

tub of whole milk PLAIN Stonyfield farms and mix it with fruit or

bananas to make it sweet. This is not ok for anyone on SCD. That might

be a better choice.

I would just be cautious in general about giving dairy to a child that

young who may not be out of the woods with autism, given the older sibs

history, that's all. At 9 months many of the kids with ASD were

appearing normal and then regressed later in toddlerhood, so it makes me

a bit nervous, that's all.

How is your little girl with the infraction fairing so far?

Oh wow, I really feel for you. It is so frustrating when you have

worked so hard to get the diet going and an infraction happens. We

had a similiar issue with my son after about 4 months on the diet. He

ate some cheese and had a terrible reaction. He was very out of it

and spacey for about 4 days. He happened to have an appt. with his

doc. in the middle of his reaction. I couln't believe how severely he

reacted but she seemed convinced that cheese was most definitely the

culprit. The good news is, though, a few months later someone at his

school gave him some yogurt and his reaction was not nearly as severe.

Good luck. Hope your daughter fares well.
