Hi, all! I'm new to the whole concept of this procedure, and excited

as all get out. I've written my lists of pros and cons - and I'm

determined to have the MGB as soon as I can, assuming I'm a

candidate!! My problem is that I haven't a regular Dr.; since I'm

basically very healthy, I've been going to a " Doc in the Box " (urgent

care center) for any illnesses and injuries for years, so I don't

have

much of a consistent medical record. Since I need the MD

recommendation and referral, any thoughts on how to find a

sympathetic

MD? I have insurance, and I really don't care about being in or out

of a program, I just want to find a sympathetic Doc. Anyone in the

Washington DC/Northern Virginia area have a recommendation?

Hi Aimee! Where do you live? I'm in Falls Church, VA, and I see Dr. Lee in

the Washington Lee Primary Care office (703/538-5019). a and I have

both used him as our PCP, and he is very supportive of the MGB. He plans to

send other patients there as well! Unfortunately, their office is closing

as of August 1, but he will move to another local practice.

If you need any help, or just want to talk MGB, you can reach me at home

703/876-9889. I had the surgery on May 22, and you can read my story online

at http://onhealth.com/women/in-depth/item/item,91744_1_1.asp

Dear Aimee,

I am not only a future MGB patient, I am also a doctor. It makes wince that

you only have contact with doc-in-the-box physicians. It may require a few

trial runs but you will find a sympathetic physician! From personal bias, I

would strongly recommend starting with a family physician (that's what I am).

I have friends from medical school and have found that the more open-minded

and down-to-earth people chose FP. Ther is not that much prestige when

compared to specialists but there is a lot of job satisfaction. I too had to

" cold call " a doc to establish my PCP. True to the rumor most docs self treat

or curbside their partners. This was something I wanted to do with more

privacy. I chose a local female FP with whom I had not worked. I was nervous

that she would not understand or be one of those " if you would just watch

what you eat doctors " . Much to my surprise, she was not. A large part was the

fact that I am very well-versed on the subject. You too can and should be

well-prepared to discuss risks, benefits, options and the NIH concensus that

morbid obesity should be treated surgically. Now you can say you have a

personal friend who is a physician who recommended the surgery. That may help

too. My 1st meeting with Dr R is August 1st, with the surgery later that

week. Keep me updated on your journey.

Laurel

ps: I also moonlight as a doc-in-the-box. You may find that your local

doc-n-the-box can refer you to a sympathetic local PCP. If not, try searching

the net for Bariatric Physicians.
