Guest guest
Hi. I'm new to the list, so I'll tell you about my sister's condition and then ask my question. My 6-yr.-old sister started having seizures about 14 months ago. At first they were quite rare, but she was soon having at least two per week. She always had them shortly after falling asleep. She also experienced a temperament change around this time. We switched to a natural diet (raw milk, organic produce, no processed, free range meat & eggs), and put her on one supplement. It's called NSD (nervous system driver). We switched to the SCD February 18, 2006. She's started having seizures within the last two weeks, and the pediatric neurologist we went to wants to put her on either Tegretol or Depakote. Are any of you familiar with either of these drugs? What are the side effects? Thanks in advance, Keaghlan
Guest guest
Hi, Keaghlan. Both Tegretol and Depakote are two of the most widely used seizure meds. Tegretol is used primarily for localized seizure disorders (only affecting one area of the brain, complex and simple p[ratial seizures, and not for multiple seizure disorders) and Depakote is for generalized seizure disorders (affecting the entire brain, especially absent seizures and tonic seizures, and multiple seizure disorders). www.epilepsyontario.org has one of the best seizure websites with links to seizure types and medication information. There is a wonderful teaching packet for schools/teachers with first aid information, educational materials, etc. Typically, an EEG and an MRI are done prior to prescribing meds to determine what kind of seizures are occurring. Routine bloodwork is needed, and feel free to e-mail me off list to discuss ways of making labwork easier for young kids, esp. kids on the autistic spectrum. Our son has been on Depakote for 6 years with successes and occassional setbacks. SCD has helped tremendously with overall behavior, communication, and seizure reduction. Good luck, and again e-mail me off list if you want to talk about seizures, tests, etc. whole family SCD 2 years Mom to Dakota (8--NF, BWS, CDD, seizure disorder) and (5--happy, healthy, supportive little brother)
Guest guest
Hi Keaghlan, sideeffect are too many to even start. Ask the doctor if he knows for sure that those medication will stop seizures. He will not, be able to promise you that it will stop the seizures. ask him if they have side effects, He will tell you that they a minimal, but it would be better to take the medication rather than having seizures. Go to the pharmacy and ask them for a copy of the side effect on those drugs and let you parents make up their mind if they want to put their child on those drugs. My daughter was on Tergretol, Phenabarb and Clobozam none of them help but made the seizures worse. She had more and more infections and her white platelets got very high. She bruised very easily. She walked around in the beginning like a zombie, because that is what the medication does to you. It slows down your brain. Your brain needs more oxygen , so that you don't have more seizures and the medications does not provide that. This diet is much better to help your sister in not having as many seizures .. My daughter is still having seizures on this diet, but they are for sure not as severe and frequent as they had been before. Make sure you are informed about everything before you let a doctor talk you into something you might regret after. Hope this is of help to you.
