Guest guest
Hi. My name is Angie. I have read BTVC and discussed it with my son's new doctor. I've read a lot on BTVC website. Our family is going to go on the diet as soon as I can get it all together. This is in support of my nine-year-old son. He's extremely ADHD, developmental coordination disorder, gerd. He does not have diarrhea and it's been several years since regular stomachaches. But he passes gas something awful. Smells like something died. Now that I've read BTVC, I understand. His doctor has ordered some kind of enzyme, cod liver oil, and some kind of probiotic. My sons recently had a Comprehesive Digestive Stool Analysis. For those who understand, here are the disturbing results: Pancreatic Elastase1: 401, not too bad Putrefactive SCGAs: 9.7 Calprotectin: 75 Lactobacillus specius: no growth Yeast, not Candida albicans 1+ (not horrible) The doctor described him as malnourished (not because of how I'm feeding, but because of his digestive situation), a word that is just breaking my heart. He's skinny, but so is his older brother and so were his father and I as children. We are all ova-lacto vegetarians who sometimes (not often) eat fish. Except for my nine year old, who will not eat fish. We are vegetarians for ethical reasons. (My husband and I have been for 17 years. The kids for their whole lives.) My nine year old has begged before to be vegan, but I told him that was a choice he could make as an adult. We are going to do SCD. But the inital 2-5 day period is mind-boggling for a vegetarian. We're not dealing with diarrhea. Can we skip that 2-5 day period? If not, how to cope? What to eat? Ordering a yogurt maker tomorrow. Other questions regarding die-off: flu-like symptoms might include what? Fever, feeling bad. Cold like symptoms? Are there negative side effects to activated charcoal? Where does one purchase that? We live in a small town with a Wal-Mart, a CVS, and a health food store. Is it reasonable to find at chains? I feel like we're easing on to the diet, simply because this just all became the plan yesterday, and I just haven't had the time to figure it all out, shop, and cook. Additionally, we are traveling this weekend. I'm not making whiny excuses; I just have to get it organized and it takes time to read and read and read. And I work and parent. Meanwhile, I feel like I'm starving my child nutritionally. I'm trying hard to not babble. I've got to go pick up older son. I've got to stop crying. We don't have it near as bad as some that I've been reading about. I just cry easily and feel very overwhelmed. Thanks, Angie whole family about to start SCD to support nine year old son with extreme ADHD and lab-documented digestive dysbiosis
Guest guest
Hi Angie, Welcome to the group - these people are fantastic and extraordinarily knowledgeable! We started SCD for my ASD son almost 3 months ago and it is hard work but the payoff is incredible. No other diet helped my son's digestive issues (constant stomachaches, diarrhea everywhere - all the time) except SCD - 100% legal, I must add. I hope your doc is aware that the supplements and probiotics must be SCD legal - this was an amazing thing that we discovered with our guy - he wasn't tolerating the additives and fillers (sweetners, etc.) that are OFTEN found in supplements - so be aware of this. It's hard not to feel overwhelmed with the news about your son's intestinal health and about the new path you are to embark upon, but in time when healing starts you will know you've done the right thing!!! Good luck! Lynn - Mommy to Cameron 3.9 (ASD)- SCD 70+ days and Mia Jean (20 months), DH SCD 20+ days
Guest guest
Hi again Angie, I meant to add more: " But the inital 2-5 day period is mind-boggling for a vegetarian. " Do you eat eggs? B/c we relied heavily on eggs and banana/cauliflower pancakes (made w/eggs) on intro - we still go back to the intro diet when behaviour/gut issues creep back. A vegetable soup would be an option to the chicken soup... " We're not dealing with diarrhea. Can we skip that 2-5 day period? " Other questions regarding die-off: flu-like symptoms might include what?Fever, feeling bad. Cold like symptoms? I ordered my husband into SCD after dealing with another round of his mysterious migraines. He did not have any " digestive issues " to speak of, but within 2 days of the diet, had die-off for about 3 weeks that included diarrhea and feeling tired and cranky (man - no fun!) " Are there negative side effects to activated charcoal? Where does one purchase that? We live in a small town with a Wal-Mart, a CVS, and a health food store. Is it reasonable to find at chains? " We haven't found any negative side effects to activated charcoal, it always seemed to help matters when my son was in the throes of a die-off reaction. I personally haven't shopped for it yet (our DAN! doc gave us a handful of them after ordering our guy onto SCD) - but I'm sure they have them at healthfood stores/can order them - or you can order just about anything online and have it delivered to your house! Take care! Lynn - Mommy to Cameron 3.9 (ASD) SCD 70+ days and Mia Jean (20 months), DH SCD 20+ days
Guest guest
Lyn said:........ " But the initial 2-5 day period is mind-boggling for a vegetarian. " ........ I respond in a lengthy and heart felt message: Dear Lyn, You will have to start the " die off " with the intro diet, found on pecan web site. If you don't the microorganisms will not start to die....we did it longer than just the three days recommended by most...but then we had more GI problems going on....it is individual. The activated charcoal is a God send (we started without it and PAID!). It soaks up all the toxins that the bad guys release when they die....making a person feel dizzy, nauseous, poop/eliminate more, sweat, low grade fever (do not medicate this), achy joints and muscles,....irritability.....easy crying.....even has a part in causing " cravings " for sweets! It is not fun...warn you now. Hang close to serve and we will help guide/support you through it! Warm Epson Salt soaks in the bath help with the " pain " and discomfort. About the vegetarian part.....may want to pray on that one. We too have experimented with many ways of eating during our " lives journey " ....this was one of them. During this time of my life I was my sickest, and was following strict nutritional guide lines for being " vegetarian " . If I knew now what I now know about B12 deficiencies and vitamin B problems being caused by the Illeum (the part of the small intestine that absorbs being so sick and damaged, I would have never done this to my self. I was undiagnosed at the time (the doctors missed that my intestines where damaged up until I was 37 years old!)....didn't know that my gut was so sick and suffered the consequences being ASD myself.....You see I was undiagnosed at the time....and we just didn't know. If your child has ASD you can assume that his Ileum is compromised and that he has B12 and B problems. This is why your DAN! recommended this diet..so that his gut could heal. The problem with the vegetarian diet is that it is naturally low in these very vitamins...especially B12....which by the way is not absorbed well by anybodies gut in just pill form....compromise this with a damaged ASD gut and it is worse. Even us meat eaters are having to get B12 shots and use B12 inhalers/sprays and gels in the beginning of healing the gut.......to get over this deficiency hump this is a must for many of us....not eating meat could spell disaster for the success of your ASD son...since meat is naturaly VERY high in this very vitamin. B12 deficiency can cause problems with attention, depression, irritability, cloudy thinking, and even mental illness and ASD symptoms....I urge you to research the affects of B12 deficiency. Although primitive man before the spear and arrow where created never hunted like like a wolf....scientific proof showed that human evolved by scavenging for meat....foods high in B12...a mater of fact the native American's (the last " hunter gatherers " of America) use to enjoy eating the warm liver raw...to help themselves with this very deficiency...they knew...BEING VERY IN TUNED TO MOTHER NATURE AND WHAT THEIR BODIES NATURALLY NEEDED. This is why we don't have fangs....but when we developed the spear could hunt even better....I urge you to learn about the human bodies natural genetic predisposition for needing meat in the diet. Do research on the original diet of mankind and learn what the human body is design for....genetically preconditioned to eat and do well on. You will discover why the SCD works (if implemented with meats)! I DON'T KNOW IF THOSE VEGETARIAN ON scd HAD THE SAME SUCCESS.... I URGE YOU TO DO THIS FURTHER INVESTIGATION, for you sick and nutritionally deprived son.....all ASD kids are " starving " in a since due to their damaged guts...not just the vegetarian ones! This means that their brains are starving too! This is why the SCDiet works so well and fast for many ASDer's...because once the gut heals...and it heals rather fast once the die off has occurred....the brain starts to get the nutrients it needs....finally...to develop normally...vanishing many ASD problems. But only if they get what they need! Even Elaine in her BTVC book said that it mind boggled her how a vegetarian could possibly get enough naturally occurring B12 in the diet (that occurs only in meat and some grains)....she couldn't even come up with a solution for those vegetarians....AND SHE WAS A SMART LADY! The SCD diet saved our daughter/family...have a ways to go....still relatively " new " to the process of true healing. I wish we had started sooner...but better late than never. Please rethink this vegetarian theme and concentrate more on the morality issues of saving your son.......embrace the " human " inside of you that has proven to need meat in light of many scientists and looking into the " original diet of mankind (which I might add did not involved grain and all these complex carbs!) " ...and understand that this SCDiet may not work for your son unless your DAN! realizes the importance of making CERTAIN he is getting enough B12 and B vitamins eating in this manner (taking blood tests often to make sure he is OK....insist on it being done!)...something that would be done naturally if eating meat. Especially now that you have to take Grain and starches out of the diet.....the main thing many vegetarians rely on to break this imbalance. No judgment...just sharing experience strength and hope, You are a good mom for saving your son AND DOING THIS! Hang in there...and stick close to serve! WE ALL WELCOME YOU! Sincerely, Antoinette p.s. Almost two months entire family SCD, reasons Celiac Disease and ASD problems...mother to 23 month old Celiac ASD, and 4 year old Celiac ASD and 18 month old Hyperekplexia! Finally healing the SCD way....wouldn't go back to old ways if you paid us. We are getting our children back when no other way worked! a..
