Hi Laurie-

Thanks for your best wishes. Tell me how you heard about Dr. R and what

stage you are at in considering the MGB.

I have a friend who had surgery in June of 1999. She has lost over 100

pounds and is still losing. She weighed over 300, but I don't know how far

over. She still has about 40 to 50 to lose, as she borrowed some of my

clothes to go on a cruise - but basically she is almost 'half' of the person

she was a year ago. She looks great, she feels great and has nothing but

praise for the MGB.

Unbelievably, my insurance was approved the first time, and within one week!!

Of course, I have a $2,500 out of pocket, but that would be the case with

any surgery under my insurance plan. I feel like I can spend that amount to

extend my life! I was shocked that my insurance did not give me a problem!

So, now I going to Durham next week for the consultation and gathering my

other stuff like pap smear, mammograms and 10 contacts. I am still nervous -

but I have this sense in my heart that it is the right thing to do.

Let me know how it is going for you!

Its funny how people think about this so differently. When I have mine and

lose my weight you bet I will tell everyone that asks what I did! If some

people don't understand then maybe I can enlighten them...I guess I feel it

is part of our job to educate people and spread the word about this wonderful

tool. Telling people might just help someone else who is struggling with

weight to. But I do understand those of you who are extremely private..my

mom is like that..I just view it completely differently. Best of luck to you

....please keep in touch and let us know how you do after surgery.

I have a lot of the same concerns as you andwant the surgery for the

same reasons. I look forward to how our post-op friends will

Pretty much within a week after surgery. By then, you are healing.

You'll still be able to eat, you'll just be eating more slowly and

chewing much better. Other people won't notice, other than you'll have

some food left at the end of the meal.

If anyone comments, you can just truthfully say, " I couldn't eat another

bite, really. Thanks. " What more do you need to say?

" I ate less. " That's the truth.

We all have our own reasons, whatever they are, that led us to the

decision. Those of us who made the decision to enhance our appearace

think our reasons are just as good as yours. :) I'm the Barbie

Holly and Dawn: We do all feel differently. While the decision was mine and

mine alone, I

opted to run my huge mouth to anyone and everyone who would listen. As a result,

a friend

of my daughter's best friend called me today. I will be coming to clinic with

her and kind of

" walk " her through this surgery. If I hadn't been so open, she wouldn't have

known. I say

this not to persuade you to tell anyone...that truly is personal and dependent

upon the folks

that surround you...their personalities, your history, etc. I have friends who

have family that

they just wouldn't be able to tell. But then I'm the kind of person who blabs

about being

pregnant when I'm a few hours late...(I think anyway, it sure was a long time

ago).

And my daughter is having MGB also. And that's all because Amy cared enough to

meet me

for lunch and talk to my daughter about her experience. My daughter does not

plan to tell her

friends or in-laws that she is having surgery. Today she called her doctor's

office (who is very

supportive) and one of the receptionists said " Drema, you're not really going to

do this are

you? " My daughter said, " Charlene, are you sitting in a chair? " And Charlene

said yes, she

was. My daughter said, well that's nice...because you fit in one..I don't. And I

am not telling

anyone that I'm having this so please respect my confidentiality " .

So that's my take. One family...one big mouth..one very private person. Mox Nix.

Makes no

difference. The important thing is we are making a huge decision that is good

for us. If we can

bring others along with us that's good too!

My best to both of you whatever you decide and however you decide to handle

this. As for

me, this will be the year of the MGB with two people to come to Durham

with...and two

others thinking about it.

Flo from land sittin' here meltin' away to nothing...just a boneyard

....getting closer to

that 250 mark every day! Painfully thin...yup that's me...painfully thin Flo

somewhere

between 272 and 250

Trish, you really need not to be so jealous of me just because I'm becoming so

thin and have

natural blonde hair. I cannot help it if people capitalize my name. I cannot

Hi Laurie & Laurel !

I too have so much going on in August, and am hoping for a date of September

13th ! I have finished all of my packet except the pics..should be

developed soon, and the copies of the PE,EKG, and labs (my physical exam and

EKG was last Friday, its being dictated now.) I should have my packet out to

Dr.R's ofc by Monday the latest. I was told I didnt need a mammogram (i'm

I would love to keep in touch, hopefully we could have surgery together !
