I agree that this is an extremely individual decision. I have decided to tell

only a select few about my upcoming surgery. It's not that I'm ashamed of the

decision, I think it's more that I have announced traditional diet attempts

in the past only to feel embarrassed when I failed. I'd rather share my

journey with others after the surgery when I start to lose the weight. I have

enough on my mind right now, I don't need the added judgement of my

colleagues. As you may know, I'm a doctor. That , of course means, that my

colleagues are doctors...most of whom have outdated opinions of obesity and

its treatment. The proof is in the putting (sp?) when it comes to doctors.

I'll show them the proof in action.

I believe the saying is " The proof is in the pudding. " But, being a lover of

words, I started thinking about this expression and here I sit wondering

where it came from. Probably from the English, as many of our quaint sayings

came from them. For instance, did you know the expression " counting heads "

came from back in the days when beheading was the norm in jolly old England

for dealing with disgressions large and (shockingly, also) small. The

miscreants' heads were then skewered atop the posts in London and the

citizenry would stroll the streets " counting heads " to see how many had been

executed that day. Bloooody " ell, I say!.......

" Proof is in the pudding " , meaning that you cannot know a thing is

tasty or good until you've tried it (in the case of the expression,

dessert). Sorry, pedantic as hell, I know.

I, for one, have no intention of telling anyone JACK**** except on a

need to know basis. I didn't like nosy-parkers butting into my

affairs, or commenting on my eating habits as a fat person, and I

don't believe they'll have any right to do it as I drop weight. This

is about me, not about them, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

But I have to say, I look forward to a few sets of eyes bugging out

in

astonishment and envy.

Aimee,

you go girl! I love your answer about telling or not......I needed you to

whisper that in my ear yesterday, then I wouldn't be all ticked off today for

telling extended family!

Thanks,

I wasn't going to tell anyone, but then I felt led to tell three of my

closest friends because I knew they would pray for me. They were

surprised by the news and said they have never viewed me as overweight.

I explained to them that the weight they didn't see is slowly killing

me. They have been very supportive prayer warriors.

Wow!

Never knew that! I love stuff like this. Here's one back at'cha. When

figuring out units of measure many years ago (again in jolly old England)

they measure the Monarch's foot (King , me thinks?) Anyway, the

bigfooted man measured 12 inches and that is why 12 " is the unit of measure,

why it is called a " foot, " and why we measure it with a " ruler. "
