Guest guest
Tara; If it's any consolation, my DAN recommended the same thing for my daughter - SCD no dairy, no honey and very low fruit. At least for a little while until her gut/yeast/bacteria issues are under control (no dairy indefinitely though). She has chronic gut issues. So, no - your DAN isn't the only one to recommend very low to no honey to start the diet. We can co-miserate ;-) Kim 3 yo ASD, 2 yo NT + behavioural problems, expecting a Baby in December, still waiting on confirmation from my DAN to start dairy-free SCD for whole family. Re: Re: Honey and SCD TARA question the doctor??? Dear Tara, I know I am not winning a popularity contest here on this honey topic...but why is it that this SCDiet has worked for over 50 years using honey...and all of a sudden one DAN doctor has many now doubting that you can't use honey? Guest guest
Friends; If the physician suspects a severe yeast overgrowth (usually DXd via stool microbiology and urinary metabolites), then restriction of simple sugars is perfectly correct. Yeasts directly metabolize glucose (and fructose, etc.) molecules as substrate for anaerobic fermentation. Therefore, in the presence of yeast in the upper portions of the small bowel, e.g., Candidiasis of the duodenum and/or jejunum, even moderate consumption of simple sugars is contraindicated. Eliding a host of details, the simple sugars will nourish the yeast colony, not the human host, in a continually worsening ratio. Once the candidiasis is regulated, simple sugars can usually be carefully reintroduced. The reality is that there is no one size fits all dietary or pharmacological prescription that will be optimal for myriad gastrointestinal pathologies. An optimal treatment approach should be customized to the specific pathologies and genetic expression of an individual human being, not the assumptions of a theoretical model. As per the disclaimer of BTVC, SCD should be implemented under supervision of a properly brained and trained physician who can account for the individuality of patients and pathologies. Good luck. I think this DAN-MD should write an article about honey and SCD to explain it. -If he feel not to write, he could record an audio instead (and publish it as a Podcast Yours, Frode Svindseth SCD 3 Months -- Oslo, Norway ***********************
