Guest guest
Still exploring my yogurt making appliance options. I don't need specifics, but how does one make yogurt in a food dehydrator. I like the idea of buying one appliance that can also do other things. Is it much less convenient than a yogurt-maker? Please tell me if you've had good or bad experiences using a dehydrator for yogurt making. (This will sound stupid----do you pour the yogurt ingredients in the tray, or do you take the trays out and use something else(but what?) to hold the yogurt ingredients?) Oh, I feel so stupid asking this. Guest guest
> Please tell me if you've had good or bad experiences using a dehydrator > for yogurt making. I bought a large Excalibur dehydrator. I use 3 quarts of milk each time I make yoghurt, but more could fit. The dehydrator successfully makes yoghurt. I haven't gotten to the point of making dried anything yet, but I still hope to. So I'm glad I have the machine. Yet I wish some things were different. See below. Drawbacks: It is quite noisy. There's this blower inside that goes all the time. The room you put it in and adjoining spaces will not be peaceful during the 24 hours you are running it. The noise is not like a vacuum cleaner or anything like that, but I would prefer to not have the noise. It takes up a lot of counterspace. The dial is not precise enough to easily keep the temperature needed. I use an electronic thermomter to keep track of the temperature. The temperature goes up and down--like your electric frying pan, you know? Heats up, then reaches desired temp, then turns off until temp dips then turns on again. The electronic thermometer shows how it goes up and down. Occasionally, the temp dips below the needed temp or goes up above what is considered the maximum temp, but this doesn't happen every time and when it does it's very briefly. The temperature range varies depending where on the counter I set it. I watch the range for quite some time when I start it up to see what the range is going to be and whether it's correct. Then I adjust on the temperature dial and watch for quite a while longer. On this dial, a small adjustment can make a big difference so I might have to do this a few times. Once I'm certain the temp range is good, I can just leave it. I sure wish it was an easier to control dial. Hope my input helps you make a decision, , mom to
