About to start diet - yoghurt?

Hello All

I have ME/CFS/CFIDS and, due in part to the (strange and

fascinating) connections between that and Autism, am about to start

the SCD tomorrow. I have read BTVC and some web sites and am a bit

confused about when to use yogurt. Some people say after 3 months;

the starter menu includes it with the curd cheese and also suggests

using a yogurt cheese in the cheesecake if you can't get the dry

curd stuff which, as far as I can tell, you can't in the UK.

In fact until I get a yoghurt maker I shall be making kefir (made

from raw goats milk). My question is: can I use it from the start?

If not I fear my diet is going to be very limited and I am already

underweight. Even when I can start to introduce nuts I will have to

limit them as I have a thyroid problem and almonds, walnuts and

peanuts can make it worse, which is a great shame because I love

them.

I am half looking forward to starting this and half dreading it -

it does sound rather daunting but I have already learnt a lot of

usful things from reading messages here. Is there anyone else on

this site with ME/CFS/CFIDS?

Best wishes to all

Hi. Me, I joined recently after reading the Pangborn/Baker book on

Autism recommended by a CFIDS researcher on another list I'm on.

I'm hoping to start a decent semblance of the diet on May 22nd, when

I will be alone for a few days, so I can roll around and snarl with

die off by myself.

Am on a structured CFIDS protocol that includes ImmunePro and a few

pills that have some starch in them, but still hoping to get some

improvement in energy and leaky gut syndrome by going on this diet.

I tried to make goat yogurt in my oven a couple weeks ago but it was

a disaster. The oven pilot light only gets it to 90 degrees and

somehow it wicked up and got all over the oven, which we had to clean

and the fumes from the oven cleaner made me sick. So I'm researching

yogurt makers.

Since I am allergic to eggs and cow dairy, I will have to move onto

the other foods sooner rather than later, in order to get enough to

eat, but plan to do the intro diet of chicken soup a couple of days.

I don't often have diarrhea so I'm not too worried about introducing

the other foods, but will try to do so in a gradual manner.

Recently someone listed the advised sequence of introducing foods,

but I haven't been able to find it anywhere.

best of luck to you,

Helen

Hi ,

You may start the yogurt anytime you wish. The waiting period is

only for children who were dairy free prior to SCD.

The yogurt is such a healthy food! Please do use it. There might be

some die off from the yogurt,so just watch carefully. If you have

problems, then just increase the dose very slowly.

Here is an article about the benefits of yogurt:

Welcome, Helen,

This link will take you to the Food Preparation part of the

pecanbread.com website and if you scroll down you will find a chart

of the Stages.

http://www.pecanbread.com/foodprep.html

Now Elaine Gotshall did not devise these stages. Elaine felt that

after the intro diet you should just cautiously try foods one at a

time and see how you do with them. Please realize that if you try

something and you don't do well with it, you can try it again in the

future after more healing has occurred and you might be able to

tolerate it then.

But the stages break foods into categories of things, starting with

what most people find easy to digest and moving up to what most

people find the hardest to digest.

In addition, you will read comments on this list, such as, " Cashews

are harder to digest than other nuts because they are starchier. "

Then you may even find out that cashews are actually a legume!

People on this list have a wealth of information.

I will let someone else respond to the yoghurt maker question. I

use a dehydrator and you can find my comments on that in message

number 47871.

Wishing you much success,

A thousand apologies. I just did what I hate--misunderstood a post

and replied very strangely to the wrong person. :(

Apologies to Helen--you are not the person with the original question.

Apologies to --I don't think I answered anything you asked.

Mea culpa!

hi.

sorry about the last post i accidently posted . . hit the enter key

and the thing posted with nothing written from me. weird.

i just wanted to say that kefir is not recommended on scd until you

have been on the diet for a while. dont remember the time

recommended to wait but you should go to the knowledgebase section

of www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info to read about kefir. one reason

is that their is yeast in kefir. i never fully understood this. it

must not be the same yeast we are trying to rid our bodies of by

using scd but basically kefir is a complex mixture of organisms and

should not be added early on in the diet when a lot of die off will

be happening.

check out the very inexpensive yogurt maker at amazon. . . for $15.
