Guest guest
I am forwarding a post from the LI list by Marilyn Alm,author of a future SCD cookbook. ------------------------------------------------------------------ >> I only ask because with " all the rage " of these health food stores and " unique grocery stores " like Trader Joe's for instance, it seems that there are alot more potentially legal conveinance items available that may not have existed when the book was written...I'm not against making my own stuff, but as busy as i am, it would be nice to take a few shortcuts if available....does anyone have any insight? Thanks.. << , What you choose to use is your business, but unless it's verified by the methods we've laid out, ie, get the statement in writing, on the company stationery, then a product isn't legal. We no longer have Elaine with us, and with the exception of Seth over on Healing Crow, no bio-trained people. I can tell you this: people will tell you darned near anything in email or on the phone. But ask them to put it in writing, on stationery, and most of the time, they'll refuse. This is because signed hard copy is a legal document, and if it's wrong, they can be sued. But email can be edited, and phone calls aren't supposed to be taped. Tone's Seasonings, for instance, assured me faithfully that there was nothing that could possibly be a problem in their chili powder. But when I asked for verification in writing, they refused. As for there being MORE potentially legal things available, I'd actually say there are less. McCormick's vanilla extract, which I used for years pre-SCD used to have vanilla bean and alcohol. Now it's alcohol, high-fructose corn syrup, and vanilla bean extractives. Cream isn't cream any more. It's cream and thickeners, so they can ultra-pasturize it and keep it on the shelf longer. And those thickeners, like carageenan, are illegal. Meat isn't meat any more. It's meat injected with up to sometimes as much as 15% of " solution " which can be anything from plain water to sugar water to water with " natural flavorings " or even soy added. Oh, but they don't do that with ORGANIC stuff, you say? Don't bet on it. Check out n Nestle's book FOOD POLITICS. She has a website, too. Check out how the Big Companies try to overturn the very definition of " organic " . Heck, I got some " fresh ground peanut butter " at the Veterans Blvd Whole Food Store in Metairie which made me sicker than a dog this week. I ground the stuff myself -- but it turns out the nuts they'd put in the grinder were rancid and burned when roasting. They may have had a starch coating on them, too. I've ordered some diabetic test strips to check my iced tea when I eat out because I'm tired of getting a mouthful of tea from a jug that used to have sugared tea in it and the wait staff didn't bother to wash it out before putting unsweet tea in it. " Oh, that little bit of sugar won't hurt! " YES IT WILL! And yes, I do understand BUSY! For the last eight months, I've left home at 7:45 and returned home around 7p during the week. On weekends, up until the last month or so, I've made hundred-mile round trips to get food I could prepare and eat. No prep ahead because until last month, I didn't have a freezer or a refrigerator, other than a 4.8 cu ft. dorm fridge. The only thing I can tell people who want to try this kind of stuff is -- NO, it is NOT SCD LEGAL. But if you want to try it, it's a free world. If, however, you do try it, and then find you aren't getting any better, then the " short cut " stuff is the first stuff to go. Do I sound fanatical? You betcha I do! Because fanatical adherance is the only way to healing. And, as I've said on more than one occasion, I've tested stuff. And regretted it. -- Marilyn (New Orleans, Louisiana, USA)
