Guest guest
I started my almost 5yr old son on l-glutamine along with another new supplement about a month ago. His behavior also regressed. He became very hyper and goofy and seemed to have no self control. And he started wetting the bed again at night. His teacher also commented. We stopped both supplements about a week ago and are seeing our normally cooperative son return. We were going to reintroduce the glutamine to see if it was that or the other one, but after your e-mail, we will probably re-think that. Guest guest
There was discussion on the Mercury list about the link between Glutathione and L-Glutamine. The discussion was so technical (and was mostly about the Glutathione) they lost me, but I got the impression that there is a connection. Maybe someone else on the list can explain it. Guest guest
Hi , This is just a suggestion -- but with what we went through on the L-Glutamine -- I wonder if you should take him off for a week and see if you see any changes in behavior. It has taken about a week for Austin to get better. Just a thought and wishing you well. Guest guest
Evelyn, I had read the same thing on that list and was very confused. Sometimes that list is like trying to decipher cryptic messages. All i can decipher is that my DAN Dr keeps saying to put him on glutathione and I keep reading things that I think tell me to be wary. So here I sit unsure what to do................ugh. Thanks, L-Glutamine > > > > > > > > > > I have been giving Austin L-Glutamine for about 3 months. Guest guest
Hi joycessas! We used a brand by Perque for a while. I can't remember if it was legal or not, but I think that it was . . . and Perque really puts out high quality products. But you may want to look into this idea some more. I believe that glutamine is an " exitotoxin " . This can cause other problems (I think primarily neurological). I don't know much about it because I am looking into other issues that are more urgent for our family, but I wanted to post this heads up. This way you can look further into it before making your decision. Jeni Lynn (gastrointestinal problems) > > I was wondering if anyone knew of a good glutamine powder to use? Guest guest
Yes, glutamine is an excitotoxin. Excitotoxins kill brain cells (neurons) by overstimulating them. Neurosurgeon Blaylock's book " Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills " is one good source of info. But if you search the web, articles by Blaylock and other people are pretty easy to find. Guest guest
I dont understand about L-glutamine. L-glutamine supports the immune system and helps leaky gut. Guest guest
I seem to recall the Perque brand had rice flour in it. I got rid of ours because it was illegal and we switched to Allergy Research Group L-Glutamine, which just has cellulose and magnesium stearate. Guest guest
I buy Jarrow brand of L-glutamine. Suzanne wrote: I seem to recall the Perque brand had rice flour in it. Guest guest
Suzanne, You are probably right. I simply don't remember because I was in the throws of " legalizing " our whole supplement protocol at the time. The glutamine did go out the window for us, but I don't remember why . . . it must have been a combination of " illegal " status and being an excitotoxin (which I discovered about that time). Guest guest
Well, something can be good for one part of the body and bad for another. Also, the natural way for the body and brain to get glutamine is as a slow trickle as protein foods are gradually digested in the gut. Human bodies were not meant to get " floods " of glutamine as they do from supplements. The blood-brain barrier does not regulate the flow of glutamine and related compounds into the brain, because the brain uses glutamine etc. and nature didn't plan on supplements and " floods " . But even if the BBB did regulate glutamine, our brain-injured children have " leaky " BBBs. Another thing is that glutamine released in a trickle from protein digestion is accompanied by " balancing " amine acids such as taurine, and by magnesium (neuroprotective against excitotoxins). My thinking is that if you want to provide glutamine for the gut and the immune system, the best way to do it is with really good broths and " bone broths " . A long, slow cooking process starts breaking down protein so it is easily absorbed. But again the excitatory amino acids are balanced with inhibitory amino acids and neuroprotective magnesium. Blaylock's really good on excitotoxins. One article of his that I found on the web was titled something like " Not Just Another Scare: Toxic Additives in Your Food and Drink " . But if you can't find the info on the web, his book is comprehensive. I wish the docs treating autism, leaky gut, etc. and Blaylock et al. would put their heads together and give us parents " best practice " advice -- " Two heads are better than one.
