Guest guest
O.K., here's the situation. My 3 yr. old son was diagnosed in Mar. '06 with autism. I've spent the last 2 months reading everything I can get my hands on. My husband and I were just set to try the GFCF diet when I came across Breaking the Vicious Cycle on the internet. Now I'm torn because this sounds like a viable option for my son too. We've never seen a doctor for intenstinal issues and have no idea if he has food intolerance, yeast, or other issues. Here's some questions: what kind of medical evaluation would you recommend before starting SCD? Would you try GFCF first or not? Obviously, I'm going to get a copy of the book, but are there other sources I should look to? Does this seem to work better for ASD kids with certain characteristics? I've got a million more...but I'll start here:) Thank you in advance for your input...I'm sure you've been in the desperate - I want to do anything to help my child - info. seeking mode that I'm in right now:) Thanks! Guest guest
Hi Leah; I too have a 3 yo with autism. We have been doing biomed for over a year with her. She doesn't respond to many treatments so we are giving SCD a try. Please don't be discouraged - many ASD kids improve greatly with biomed/dietary interventions. We feel we have wasted over a year on a strict GFCFSF yeast free, sugar free, fruit free, egg free (list goes on) diet. She still has gut issues which hopefully will be addressed by following SCD. If I were you I would start with SCD. Very simple ways to tell if your child has intestinal/yeast issues: Does your child suffer from chronic diahrrea or constipation (or alternate between the two)? Does he crave food items such as milk/milk products, wheat products (is he a Mac n' Cheese kid?) and sugary foods? ASD kids are often self selective to the foods that are the worst for them. The yeast/bacteria crave the carbs and so our kids will seek out these foods. Have you read about leaky gut syndrome? Also, does your child sometimes act " drunk " ? Does he wake up in the middle of the night laughing/partying? This is yeast. I would recommend reading " Children With Starving Brains " by Dr. McCandless if you haven't already. A good place to start for biomed. Explains leaky gut/bacterial yeast issues. O.k - I'm writing a novel. Feel free to contact me off list if you have any biomed questions. I hope I've helped a little :-) Kim Just starting SCD - whole family 3 yo severe autism, 2 yo NT, expecting in Dec. doing some research O.K., here's the situation. Guest guest
I hope some of the very knowledgable people answer you, but from a celiac, I would chime in and say the gf products (all the gums) feed the bad gut bacteria because the gums are indigestable. I have a daughter who has always been gf, based on our family celiac history and I began to get very concerned due to the fact that so much of the bread products have very little nutrional value due to the starch flours and gums you have to use to make them work. Just my two cents. Also, before we started SCD, I was able to check out the book from our local library, this might save you a couple of dollars (I know our kiddos take a lot of money) while you are deciding. Best wishes while you decide the best path for your son. Keep asking your questions, the people here have a phenomenal amount of knowledge and are very caring.
