We have had our two kids in swimming lessons and it seems that as time

has gone on our 5 yr old has been more volital after lessons. The

last 4 + lessons, at lease, he has had a major upset. Is it possible

that he is having some kind of reaction to the chemicals in the

water? What can I do if this is the case? He love being in the water

and is doing really great with the lessons. We just are not enjoying

the hr or so after.

HELP!!

If your son has low glutathione, going in a regular swimming pool/regular

swimming pool chemicals is not a good idea. If you feel that the swimming

lessons/pool are indispensible, you might consider talking to your son's

DAN! doctor about testing/supporting your son's glutathione

levels/detoxification capacities, etc.

Sandy,

Both of my kids have terrible reactions to swimming pool water.

What we have to do to counteract the effect is give extra MSM,

Taurine, and wash them immediately afterwards and rub them down with

Magnesium Sulfate cream.

We don't swim often because of their reaction. They love water, but

we have to avoid pools.

Ok, can you tell me what MSM and Taurine is and where do I purchase

these three items. Is this stuff that will hurt for them to have

twice a week? Do you give them the supplements right before

swimming or when?

What have you done for swimming lessons for your kids? It is

something that he loves and does so good I hate to not have him do

it. That doesn't even enclude the importance of them learning to

swim for safety.

I think I could cry.

RE: supplementing willy nilly:

After you have considered consulting with a DAN! doctor to establish your

unique child's challenges and needs, Kirkman Labs is one source for MSM,

taurine, and magnesium sulfate cream. I don't know if giving sporadic doses

is the correct approach here.

My last e-mail didn't seem to go through. It said:

Unfortunately, neither of my kids can swim. We only venture into

swimming pool water about twice each summer. It makes me sad too

because they love to be in the water.

I've contemplated the swimming lessons, but haven't ever done it

because of their negative reactions to the water.

But for now, we've talked about how neither of them knows how to swim

and how they should never get in water without an adult present.

MSM and Taurine can be purchased from a variety of places. Health

Food Stores, online stores, etc. You can do a google search and

compare prices.

The Magnesium Sulfate Cream can be purchased from Kirkman Labs, but

you can also make it yourself. The " recipe " is available... trying to

remember where. I bet you can find it on Google as well.

Jody, you said that you up their doses of MSM and Taurine. What is

the inisial purpose of them and how much do you give them?

If we had the availability of a DAN dc I would think I had died and

gone to heaven. We live about 400 miles from the nearest and travel

is extreemely difficult with our oldest son (37) in a power chair.

I was wrong it is not difficult, it is a night mare.

I would love to even find a MD that doesn't look at me like I have 3

heads when I mention a special diet helping our son.

" Jody, you said that you up their doses of MSM and Taurine. What is

MSM is for their allergies.

They take 500mg during low allergy season, 1000mg during high allergy

season.

Taurine is an amino acid. They both sleep through the night when they

take it. They take 325mg morning and evening.

Both of my boys are low in glutathione (as Teri mentioned).

As I said before we do not have a DAN Dr available. I would love to

have that kind of support but it isn't there.

Jody- Do you live anywhere near a lake? Here in Maine, a lot of

communities still do swimming lessons at the local lake. Of course you

freeze your butt off when it's cool in the morning, which it often is.

Noah does okay with pools which we've done before, but he (and mom)

likes him to be in a pool where his feet can be firmly planted on the

ground. This year he'd move from the kiddie pool to the pool at the

local university. So we're switching to our rec program lessons at the

local lake.

What about going camping somewhere where there's a lifeguard and a nice

swimming lake?

Unfortunately, I wouldn't swim in or any any fish from our local lakes.

As for Sandy asking if the children " outgrow " the problem... I guess

it depends on what is causing the problem. As Teri mentioned, it is

associated with low glutathione and possibly sulfur issues from

different things that I have read. I've not heard of anyone

" outgrowing " it, but I've not done any research or even asked any

parents about it.

As of last summer, it still negatively affected my boys.

You also asked whether tap water is a problem. For my boys it is.

used to scream when bathed and it would take close to an hour

to calm him down afterward. (Deep pressure afterward.) This was

before I knew about Epsom Salts in the water or before I knew about

sulfur issues. With Epsom Salts in the water, he no longer screamed

and actually began to enjoy being in the water.

Since it is obviously still a problem for my kids, I limit their

exposure to pool water to 2 fun events per summer. It's not

necessarily the right choice since it does still have a negative

effect, but it's the one that we've come to weighing in the factor of

completely denying them a summertime activity vs their reaction.
