Guest guest
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but my son's acid reflux was tremendously helped by using a combination of MSM powder and Vitamin C powder. I just put them in his juice and he drinks it happily. I hope this helps you. > > What would be good for my acid reflux desease? Guest guest
What is MSM powder? My son's old reflux started up again a month after starting SCD, and we put him back on Zantac, which helps the reflux but worsens his digestion and autism. Any advice is welcome, I'd love to get him off Zantac. Suzanne Tom 3.6, ASD, SCD 86 days > > > > What would be good for my acid reflux desease? Guest guest
Suzanne, I clipped this from a supplement website: <<MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is a naturally occurring source of organic sulfur that is easily absorbed and used by the body. Taken up from the soil by plants, MSM found in foods is largely lost during food processing, storage and cooking. MSM supports organ and joint function by donating sulfur for maintenance of healthy connective tissue. MSM helps keep skin, hair and nails healthy by donating sulfur for production of keratin, a fibrous protein. Supports joint function. >> Reflux meds... if they are acid blocking type drugs, can actually impair digestion and absorbtion of nutrients. Stomach acid is actually needed to break food down, so food ends up moving on through without being properly digested. As we all know, any food that ends up undigested as it moves on down can end up feeding the bad gut pathogens. I know another SCD family who started their teenage son on the diet mainly for seizure control... but one of the first positives they saw was a dramatic improvement in his chronic, severe reflux problems. Guest guest
Thanks, Patti. I know some kids on the spectrum have problems with sulfur - do you know if there's a way to tell in advance if a child will tolerate sulfur? Or anything about what a bad reaction would be if your child doesn't tolerate sulfur? I have been puzzled and disappointed that SCD brought back my son's reflux. He's been fine for over a year and a half. We thought we were done with Zantac - I don't like PPIs for the exact reasons you mention. But he was waking at night with screaming, thrashing and arching, we could hear the reflux gurgle up in his throat, and I couldn't continue to see him suffer. Guest guest
Suzanne, No, sorry... I don't know how to tell if sulfur will be tolerated. I'd hate to say " just try it " , even though I've read that there are very few side effects to MSM. The main one seems to be increased flatulence at higher doses, from what I've read. I know some people are allergic to sulphur, though. I would think that your child would have a problem with eggs, chicken, onions, etc... foods that naturally contain sulphur, if he were reactive. Sorry I can't help more. I'm sorry to hear he's having a rough time with reflux since starting SCD. That seems odd. I wonder why? I hope it settles down. best, Patti Re: acid reflux? Thanks, Patti. Guest guest
I really feel for you as we have been down the reflux road with my son. In his case, grains triggered his so the SCD seemed to stop it. In my case, dairy and chocolate triggers it. Did you add yogurt about a month in or something new he may not be tolerating? The dan did tell us to buy zantac for him, but I got some stuff from the health store instead that seemed to help some. (looks legal- but haven't checked.) -Miracle II Miracle Neutralizer (basically a watery version of calcium, magnesium and poassium I would put in his water to neutralize his night time acid.) -King Bio Indigestion Relief - a homeopathic tasteless mouth spray - he was too young for the placebo effect and it really seems to help although I still can't wrap my mind around how the whole homeopathic scene works. I used to prop him up on pillows, but many nights I still had to go in and hold him propped up for hours just to help ease the reflux so he could doze. My heart really goes out to you for having to go through that again and I hope you figure it out soon! Janet, mom to Cody- now a big 5 yrs old and SCD since 4-17-06! > I have been puzzled and disappointed that SCD brought back my son's > reflux. He's been fine for over a year and a half. Guest guest
Good for FOOD allergies? Okay, now I'm really interested. Can you point me to any sources/resources on this?
