Elaine Gottschall Discusses Detoxification

Elaine:

" I have said again and again on this list, that levels of things like

mercury, etc. will go out of whack if a person or child is not absorbing

nutrients because of bowel problems. "

De Felice:

Let's say a person does not have excessive metals...they are fine...then

they incur poor gut health, colon problems, malabsorbtion. How do the

metals accummulate then? Are you saying that the bowel problems lead to

malnutrition so the body cannot detox properly and THAT creates the

metals build-up??? This is very interesting for sure.

I take you feel that fixing the bowel problem and dysbiosis first will

restore proper nutrition and then the body would return to natural

functional detox and that will reduce the excessive metals in the body?

Sounds reasonable. Is this correct? Some people would certainly like an

alternative to straight chelation... believe, the entire issues of

'chelation' if swimming in controversy, disagreement, hard feelings,

anxiety, and a bunch of unhappy campers.

Elaine:

Thanks so much for pursuing this. This explanation is not way out; it

is basic biochemistry and physiology. It is accepted by many clinicans

who understand the detoxification systems of the body, but as I have

said, they are not trained sufficiently in biochemistry to apply these

sytems to diet.

A simple example of what I am talking about has to do with

detoxification

by the P-450 system of the liver. Many fat soluble compounds which are

injurious to the body (fats/lipids in drugs, pesticides and herbicides

which are fat soluble compounds, and heavy metals among which are

mercury

and lead, etc. etc. etc.) enter the body and were it not for the P-450

detox system, they would remain and accumulate. The P-450 system is

equipped to make them WATER SOLUBLE through the action of glutathione

(and I have not studied the biochemistry of this compound for a long

time) and when they are water-soluble, they enter the bloodstream and

are

eliminated via the urine.

The action of enzymes which require the transfer of electrons is

facilitated by Vitamin C. In fact, these enzymes of the P450 system

cannot work without sufficient Vitamin C in the diet. Therefore, when we

have overgrowth of microbes (bacteria and yeast) in the gut, when we

have

increased permeability because of them, when we do not absorb even the

tiny amounts of nutrients in the high SAD (typical No. American diet and

also the GF/CF diet with rice, corn, gluten free wheat, etc.)) we do not

detoxify properly.

Because SCD aids in returning the gut to health, we slowly should

correct all this.
