Guest guest
Sorry for all these questions.... When i took Luke off of dairy 6 mos ago i started giving him soymilk (he drinks about 24 ozs of it a day) i also occasionally give him rice milk and almond milk! He usually drinks 4 ozs of juice mixed with 4 ozs of water per day..sometimes a little more. 24 ozs of soymilk a day and then the rest of the day he drinks water. From what i am reading neither soymilk or rice milk are acceptable SCD foods. I am not sure about the almond milk, havent found anything on that! One of the reasons i give him the enriched vitamins and calcium soymilk..is to get the correct calcium and vitamins in him for one..and because his foods are so limitied he drinks alot of the soymilk. it helps me get more calories in him too! So..my question is this...what am i supposed to give him to drink all day? how much juice a day is recommended? Is he only able to drink juice and water now? Also i have been giving him poly-vi-sol vitamins in his juice each day. Its a liquid mulitvitamin. Can i still give this to him or is there something in it he cant have on SCD. He will not accept gummy vitamins and cant swallow pills. What type of liquid vitamin is SCD approved, if any?? Thanks so much for your help! karen
Guest guest
We have had much success with making smoothies out of goat yogurt. We came casein free and remain so. When the SCD yogurt it fermented for 24 hours with SCD yogurt starters; the Pecan Bread Web Site and Elaine say that the casein is rendered harmless. We also use SCD safe juices, Coconut Milk (recipe in Lucy's Recipe book) and Almond milk...recipe on Pecan Bread. And MOSTLY water. For extra calcium we use SCD safe calcium supplements and eat dark green and dark green leafy vegetables as much as we can. But this is an advanced food so go slow. We crush Freeda's vitamins in apple sauce and honey. If you can teach them to swallow them, it is much easier. When my son was four we taught him how. Most vitamin places have SCD safe vitamins you just have to read tons of labels and take your illegal and legal list with you to do this. Otherwise ask around on this serve and they can guide you too. Try to trust the yogurt, I truly think that is one of the reasons we are having so much success. Goat is easier to digest. The die off it causes is a God send. Hope this helps Antoinette
Guest guest
, <<24 ozs of soymilk a day>> YIKES! The soymilk may be one of the worst offenders in his diet right now. Even if all you did was to change over from that to home-made almond milk (EASY to make in a blender), he'd probably improve. Soy is SO bad for people! (IMHO) Obviously, the rice milk is out..... and commercial almond milk is out because they add starches and sugars to it. I am not sure if there is a legal liquid vitamin. I assume they add some sort of illegal sweetener to just about any vite out there. Kirkman's has some legal vitamin and mineral supplements. I know the multi is a very small cap.... but I always just opened it and mixed it into applesauce for Katera (not a very strong taste).... or crushed the Freeda vites and mixed it in the same. She is one of those kids with a really underdeveloped sense of taste, though.... thankfully has never refused any food I've given her. (I know.... very rare!) Guest guest
Patti, why is soymilk one of the worst offenders for Luke? What is in the soymilk that is harming him. I was told by my ped that the soymilk was good for him. A nutritionist comes to see Luke twice monthly since there are so many foods luke wont accept because of his sensory issues. She is the one who told me to make sure he is getting a full 24 ozs per day so that he gets all the proper vitamins he needs. To be honest i am really nervous about starting SCD because so many of the foods he accepts would have to go. I am worried he would be malnourished. I am praying intently about this decision, dont want to do the wrong thing! Thanks for letting me know that the kirklands is a caplet i can open and pour on his food, good to know! Where can i order these vitamins from? Could you tell me how to make almond milk in a blender please? thanks
Guest guest
There are a couple of reasons why soy is not a good idea. There are potential health dangers of consuming a large amount of soy. For instance (source: http://www.soyonlineservice.co.nz/03summary.htm ): SOY DANGERS: * High levels of phytic acid in soy reduce assimilation of calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and zinc. Phytic acid in soy is not neutralized by ordinary preparation methods such as soaking, sprouting and long, slow cooking. High phytate diets have caused growth problems in children. * Trypsin inhibitors in soy interfere with protein digestion and may cause pancreatic orders. In test animals soy containing trypsin inhibitors caused stunted growth. * Soy phytoestrogens disrupt endocrine function and have the potential to cause infertility and to promote breast cancer in adult women. * Soy phytoestrogens are potent antithyroid agents that cause hypothyroidism and may cause thyroid cancer. In infants, consumption of soy formula has been linked to autoimmune thyroid disease. * Vitamin B12 analogs in soy are not absorbed and actually increase the body's requirement for B12. * Soy foods increase the body's requirement for vitamin D. * Fragile proteins are denatured during high temperature processing to make soy protein isolate and textured vegetable protein. * Processing of soy protein results in the formation of toxic lysinoalanine and highly carcinogenic nitrosamines. * Free glutamic acid or MSG, a potent neurotoxin, is formed during soy food processing and added to many soy foods. * Soy foods contain high levels of aluminum which is toxic to the nervous system and the kidneys. SOY INFANT FORMULA - BIRTH CONTROL PILLS FOR BABIES * Babies fed soy-based formula have 13,000 to 22,000 times more estrogen compounds in their blood than babies fed milk-based formula. * Infants exclusively fed soy formula receive the estrogenic equivalent of at least five birth control pills per day. * Male infants undergo a " testosterone surge " during the first few months of life, when testosterone levels may be as high as those of an adult male. During this period, baby boys are programmed to express male characteristics after puberty, not only in the development of their sexual organs and other masculine physical traits, but also in setting patterns in the brain characteristic of male behavior. * Pediatricians are noticing greater numbers of boys whose physical maturation is delayed, or does not occur at all, including lack of development of the sexual organs. Learning disabilities, especially in male children, have reached epidemic proportions. * Soy infant feeding-which floods the bloodstream with female hormones that inhibit testosterone-cannot be ignored as a possible cause for these tragic developments. In animals, soy feeding indicates that phytoestrogens in soy are powerful endocrine disrupters. * Almost 15 percent of white girls and 50 percent of African-American girls show signs of puberty such as breast development and pubic hair, before the age of eight. Some girls are showing sexual development before the age of three. Premature development of girls has been linked to the use of soy formula and exposure to environmental estrogens such as PCBs and DDE. Also, soy is very similar to milk in its make-up so many people that can not tolerate dairy, also can not tolerate soy. There are other ways for your child to get the nutrients they need. If you need help with this, please let me know! My children have horrible diarrhea when they consume soy so it was never an option for us.
