No, carbohydrate is not a requirement for gaining weight, the most important thing is total calories. Examples of this include eskimos and tibetian nomads, both of which thrive on essentially ketogenic diets. Extremely low carbohydrate diets have an effect on protein synthesis through cellular mechanisms, but that should not matter much for your situation. Avocadoes are a wonderfully salubrious food and a good choice for caloric ballast. Good luck. Inphoria Corporation - J. Guest guest
Hi le, Take a deep breath. I know you are very concerned... it must be difficult to not panic when little ones are losing weight. Just know that this is not uncommon... and should be very temporary. Less than one month on SCD means that they are only at the very beginning of healing. I honestly don't think it's simply a matter of getting more calories in. Remember that a damaged gut can't necessarily absorb nutrients well. You asked: <<Help...do I have to get more carbs in for them to gain weight?>> It looks to me like you are using some good carb sources.... and good fats. What about nut butters? You could begin with some of the muffin or pancake recipes that use almond butter. What about green beans? You might puree them and sneak them into chicken pancakes or muffins. Are they eating often? How many times a day? I'd suggest a small meal/snack every two hours. I don't know about the carrot juice. It's a good carb source.. but pretty high in natural sugar, actually... and might dampen their appetites for other more substantial foods. Patti, mom to Katera Losing weight (drastic)...help! We have been on SCD for less than a month and I weighed my boys last night. They are losing weight and I am beside myself (one son lost two pounds..that is a smidgen less than 10% of his body weight). One of my twins was only about 5% in the growth charts anyway. Fortunately, he lost less weight but still lost--I'm guessing he lost less because he requires less calories than his brother who had outweighed him by 4 pounds before we started SCD. We got a stomach bug last week but still that can't account for all of it. My question is this: If I get enough calories through fats (oils and avocado mainly) and proteins will we gain weight even if the total carb intake is low? Because of yeast issues, I had decided not to introduce honey and have intro'd very limited fruits right now. Our foods are avocado, limited pear sauce, limited banana (about 1/4 of 1), chicken (thigh and breast), carrots and carrot juice, coconut oil, rice oil, black olives, egg yolk. We have just started with a little squash. One kiddo (my smaller one) doesn't care for avocado but I am going to try to sneak it in recipes as he obviously needs the calories. Help...do I have to get more carbs in for them to gain weight? le
Guest guest
We also lost weight. It was a little alarming and upsetting...believe me. I know your panic. We now eat 8 times a day. And don't worry about the monosaccharide honey and fruits. They do not feed the yeast. We lived on bananas and avocados and only in the beginning took Elaine's suggestion of cutting back (not out) the honey. We lost weight I think because our bloat disappeared (no more edema either), not only that, we pooped out a bunch of fermenting junk that also contributed to the loss (sorry for the graphics), but this also played a part in our initial loss. We now have gained weight. WE are three months out though and are now absorbing our SCD foods. Daughter went from 5% to 15% in just three months of SCD. She too lost first...it scared us. Hang in there. As You can see by others responses to you. Hang in there it does get better, Antoinette (SCD 3/06 mom to -5 KiKI-2 and Bubbles-1) thanks to celiac and ASD and more. Guest guest
Hi le; I can totally empathize with your concerns. I just posted a couple days ago about the very same problem. My 2 yo is not fairing well on the early stage SCD diet. She is refusing to eat meat/veggie combinations I am making for her. VERY VERY picky with her foods and she is not looking well at all. I made some fruit muffins (blueberry - recipe on pecanbread) and spread some nut butter on it this morning and she gobbled up 2 small muffins. You might want to try this for your boys. However, when I tried to give her more nourishing food she refused again. I've tried to put avocado in her pear sauce, blending it in the blender, but she found one small chunk of avocado and is refusing to eat it now. She's constantly asking for a sandwich (grilled cheese, we are dairy free) and juice, juice, JUICE all the time. I've been giving her distilled water with a splash of juice in it. She's trying to fill herself up with liquid. I'm still debating whether to take her off the diet. She just wants sweet food and nothing with substance. She really is wasting away before my eyes and it's only been 11 days on the diet. So you are not alone - please keep us updated on their progress. Guest guest
It's very worrying to see them lose weight at first, when they are low to start with. Although they may not yet be fully digesting the foods they are eating, you should be sure to figure out if they are at least consuming enough calories for their age. Have you done this? I would agree with Antoinette - add as many meals and eating opportunities as you can. If they don't eat readily, try spoon- feeding them while watching a fun video (only a temporary step, believe me, but we did this as part of our feeding therapy program for a year!) Never force-feed them, make it fun and pleasant, but the first priority is to get sufficient calories in them. If they resist taking a bite, try turning off the video for a moment while holding the spoon to their mouth, and the instant they accept the bite, turn the video back on (simple positive behavior reinforcement - do this until they initiate eating on their own, then you can keep the video on as long as they continue to self- feed). Stop the meal after 30 minutes (set a timer) and try again in an hour if they haven't eaten enough. If they're only eating low- calorie food, then they'll need to eat more volume of those foods to make up for the calories. My 3.5 yo son can only tolerate a few veggies, meats and oils, so we feed him 5 times a day - 3 meals and 2 snacks, all of them very large, mostly vegetables. He eats about 1.5 cups of vegetables at each meal, plus a meat pattie, equivalent to about 1 lb. of meat a day. We pour oil on all his veggies to increase the calories. Let me know if this helps, I have more feeding tips and so forth, I can help you tweak it. Suzanne > > We also lost weight. It was a little alarming and upsetting...believe me. I know your panic.
