American cheese is essentially young cheddar cheese, so you have to ask the

manufacturer if it has been aged more than 30 days.

" American " cheese tends to be a processed cheese that's not purely

cheese. Mild cheddar tastes very similar.

It may be possible to find pure American cheese. I'm not sure. But

I've never seen it sold by the pound in the cheese section, only in

the processed cheese (sliced) section.
