Guest guest
Perhaps the best way to handle it is to customize for our individual kids; like we're doing. There is no way Toren is getting the same amount of carbs he used to get with the SAD. It's not possible because there are no grains; and nuts are more balanced in it's profile. The specific veggies we eat, have less carbs by their nature. I don't think Elaine ever, gave a specific ratio in BTVC. But it would be interesting to have someone analyze 100 recipes from the various cookbookbooks to know. The SCDiet by it's very nature has less starchy, grainy carbs. Let's not sweat it, let's embrace it, The SCD is a more balanced diet than the SAD; and it has a more balanced profile/ratio than the SAD. It's not high protein, fat, or carb; it's just more balanced. And it works! Agape, Knopp wrote: Hi Gwen! You are correct. According to standards that Jody posted a couple weeks ago. We are supposed to have 50 - 55% carb intake, 30% fat, and 15 - 20% protein. SCD is not low carb . . . just specific carb. I, personally, struggle with this because the protein is what my kids digest best. When I try to up their carbs we get issues with yeast and sometimes diarrhea. I wish had the solution to relay, but I am currently dealing with this difficulty myself. Anything that has a high " carb " amount seems to feed yeast. And since yeast is still a difficulty for us (although we are seeing it less and less), I find myself having to choose the lesser of two evils (low carb intake or feed the yeast). And I can't even tell you which one is the lesser of two evils. Throw into the picture that I can't seem to get my kids enough calories (due to the fact that we are casein/gluten free, not many nuts, and trying not to overdo the meat), I get completely overwhelmed. Well, I didn't mean to dump on you. But I wanted to say that yes, we are supposed to have a high carb intake. The problem is that I don't know how you should accomplish this if you find yourself in the same situation as us. And, if anyone else, knows how to solve this problem. PLEASE TELL ME! (heavy metal toxicity, leaky gut, eczema) SCD 4 months Re: DS Not eating, worries and concerns Well, I went to see my midwife friend who is helping us with this diet and doing some tests on both my son and I. I want to give the stool tests a try and see what we find. My son weighed 26.5 pounds at the office which is the 5th percentile. So in a way this is good news. I thought he had dropped off the charts again. He used to be at the 3rd percentile but gained in early Fall. He is 25% for height. I am on the cusp of being underweight at 105 and 5ft2in. My midwife and I agree that I look and act healthy. And I am. I am active and energetic. I am one of those people who can get up off the couch and climb a 14,000 foot mountain, no problem except that I'm a little slow. Slow as she goes.... Anyway, I would love to " enforce " the fruit after veggies but find my philosophy on eating getting in my way of doing that. I see my son eating veggies sometimes and other times (most of the time, yes) he eats fruit. He tends toward constipation so I think he is drawn to the laxative effect of fruit. The other concern I have, is our protein intake. WE eat sooooo much protein. I feel buzzy all the time and I think ds does too. He has been so restless at night. He had been sleeping fairly well until we started the diet again. Does anyone know if too much protein can cause a buzzy feeling. I don't think it is die off anymore. I think we should be eating more carbs than protein as this seems more balanced. Am I correct? Also wondering where you get your HCI? On page 64 of BTVC, edition 10, E;aine talks about " a well rounded diet. " Please take a moment to study the page and draw your own conclusions as to how to apply it personally. Carol F. Guest guest
Hey Guys, What we have found works well is taking the advice of our pediatrician who supports this SCDiet fully! She said that kids have a canny way of eating what they need. With the help of enzymes the carbs allowed in the SCDiet do not cause problems with yeast in our home because the enzymes break down the foods so that they don't sit in the gut undigested fermenting or becoming food to the " bad guys " . Plus as the gut heals and is able to utilizes it's own enzymes again....none of the foods on the SCDiet can become food for yeast due to the nature of them being all monosaccharides and readily available for the gut to absorb...so they don't sit around and cause trouble....fermenting and becoming food for the yeasty beasties, because our bodies are able to process and digest them fully! We all need to reread Elaine's book and stop concentrating on others that may be confusing us. When we allow our son to pick what he wants (now easy since the entire house is SCD LEGAL) I have discovered that he is eating around 45 to 50% in carbs all by himself! He craves them and wants them and since they are SCD I give him all he can eat with the aid of enzymes and not fearing the Yeasty BEASTIES! Maybe we all need to relax a little and let mother nature heal our guts and not get so stuck on numbers and what other books have said and try to trust what has proven to work the last 50 years....this SCDiet. It is going to take time guys...we didn't get sick over night and we will not heal over night....we still feel a little foggy and buzzy in the head too sometimes.....yet I know we are healing and trust that this too shall pass and it usually does. I also know that some day soon we will not need the enzymes! Food for thought. Antoinette (Day 43 entire family and healing for the first time after listening to other books and doing many experiments...becoming nuts with numbers myself.......and nothing until now worked.) Guest guest
Hi antoinette, Your stories I have read with moist eyes. Your healing journey is so powerfully illustrated with your writing. I am a total believer in SCD myself, but maybe have a different angle since my child had runny, bloody diarrhea. I wonder, did your kids have bleeding ulcers when you gave probiotics or enzymes? Was this in the first several weeks of the diet if so? I think there is a difference here worth talking about. Maybe its in the fine details. Ella would handle bananas okay early and there is an abundance of simple carbs here in them when ripe. I truely don't know the percentage of carbs, meats, fat shea te. .but only that Ella would grow less irritated when we scaled back on them after looseness and when ever we had to get back to formed for her feeling better. She simply craved and ate a ton of meat and that made her better and still does to this day. Weeks and months of this kind of SCD gave her the healing results. Just curious, Brent > Hi Gwen! > > You are correct. According to standards that Jody posted a couple weeks ago. We are supposed to have 50 - 55% carb intake, 30% fat, and 15 - 20% protein.
