Sandy,

You'll find more people culturing veggies on Healing Crow I believe.

It's a Yahoo! group as well.

Call it ignorance or smart, after finnaly getting a grip on this

SCDiet and just screwing up by using unpasturized apple cider

vinegar....and getting thrush back in our celiac duaghter with

autism...I think I will stick with just the 24-30 hour SCD yogurts,

with the SCD safe starters.

Knowing my luck...if we ate our fed my kids anything fermented other

than SCD safe things...we would ingest bad gut guys innocently again.

We have to be so careful due to the health status of our

daugheter.....her diarrhea came back with this darn vinegar too.

We went back to intro...and it seems to have killed all the bad guys

again...or at the least put them in check...so that the good gut guys

can take over again. She has no room to loose wieght anymore.

Here thrush and diarrhea are gone...took only three days to get back

on track. In the past, it was weeks of antifungals, praying and

seeing her loose weight thanks to diarrhea (her growth again slowing

to a halt)....slipping into strange autistic behaviors.

All her stimming has been gone for a week (nock on wood!)...have a

ways to go...but know we are on the right road) We just had to buy her

the next size in clothes. Still very thin though...we hope this too

passes.

Antoinette (2+ month entire family SCD/mother of 23 autistic/celiac

daughter...who is healing on the SCDiet.)

I am reading Nourishing Traditions also and hoping to incorporate

some of those ideas in my diet. It seems like a really good book.

In this book do they make sure to not introduce possible bad gut

guys that would ruin the likelyhood of success of the SCDiet???

This is the first red flag that comes up for me when I read this.

Elaine was very worried about bifidus and yeast. Dr. Haas learned

that it is overgrowth of Bifidus that cuases the vicious cycle to

start.....turning into something much more nasty than just a bifidus

overgrowth problem...as we all have learned.

Nourishing Traditions is a good book. It is not SCD with everything

but anyone who has the legal/illegal list can figure that out pretty

easy. It is like anything else you have to take what fits.

I LOVE Nourishing Traditions!

The work of Dr. Price is magnificent. There are many wonderful aspects of

Nourishing Traditions that can be worked into a legal SCDiet. As well, the food

used to heal so many on SCD has changed, getting back to the food sources and

choosing wisely has its place in healing. 30 years ago, people could walk into a

supermarket and get better food. The food now is all selenium depleted for one,

and I don't know about anyone else, but the basic meat pieces at grocery stores,

I have had a hard time finding any without solution, also the meat pieces stink.

I am sure Elaine had access to better quality food than what passes at Safeway,

Winco and rest right now. It is refreshing to wake up to what real whole foods

are, where they come from, how they are raised.

This has been a monumental cookbook, I am thankful for all the work and

studies of Dr. Price, he has healed many.

I hope you all enjoy many of the recipes as my family has!!! If anyone lives

in my area (Washington) I can put you in touch with farms in my locality.

For me this book might work because I am open to trying and

synthesizing different ideas from different people, as I am already

doing with my CFIDS treatment. If it makes sense, then I listen.

CFIDS is chronic fatigue immune dysfunction syndrome, also called

chronic fatigue syndrome. I found this list because a researcher

recommended a book on autism, he thinks there are some similarities

and I noted some of the things I am on are given by DAN practitioners

to autistic kids. So I thought I'd try the diet as well, to the

extent I am able in view of my other protocol, about 95%.

Yes, I see, this makes perfect sense...they're both auto-immune processes... and

we know that as soon as we hear immune problem, we know that gut problem had to

precede.

This is also laid out nicely in the GAPS book.

Not to discuss other diets unduly, but I do want to note that we did

the Body Ecology Diet for 8 months before starting SCD. There are many

polysaccharides in the BED that continued to cause us problems. In

addition, we used cultured vegetables very heavily, using what I think

is " wild fermentation " and I think they caused an acidosis condition

in my son. He tested positive for D. Lactate after months on the

diet, and I think the wild cultured vegetables were the cause.

Just a caution. Acidosis is not something to mess with. It can lead to

pancreatitis, I beleive.

I think the principle behind fermented foods is a good one, but I

beleive you should be sure to nurture healthy flora not unhealthy

flora. Our kids guts are sensitive, not a laboratory to grow whatever

happens to thrive in their intestines.

Dear Antoinette,

You are most definitely doing the right think by starting the diet

safely. It's really wonderful to read how well your daughter is

doing already. We had to be extremely careful with our son, Eddie,

also. When we tried the first tiniest tiniest amount of probiotics

we made him very poorly (such a night that night!) I could never

believe a few months later he would be having yohurt and pear

puddings - but he had done a lot of healing inbetween times. It's

really hard for me to believe we are expanding his diet but SCD has

been wonderful for him (and us).

Very best wishes

Sandy

Dear Jody,

Many thanks this is exactly what I needed. I've just joined the

Healing Crow Yahoo group and found Seth's article about SCD legal

fermented foods (in the files section).

There's even a link to the Weston A Price Foundation (which I now know

is headed by Sally Fallon who wrote " Nourishing Traditions " ) So this

is exactly what I was hoping to find! And SCD too - great.

Many thanks
