UH Joanne,

There will not be very much sleeping the first night. You will

want to walk, and of course the nurse will be in to bug you and make sure you

are breathing correctly. (that might have just been my nurse~ she called me

precious all night when she wasn't telling me to breath) So getting up and

going to the bathroom is a good thing.

Sorry.

I thought Dr R discontinued the foley catheter. I am almost 100% sure I

didn't have one. He used to use one, but I recall an email of things he

changed.

Now this is weird but I feel I know you all well enough that I can tell you

- I like having a catheter in!!!! I don't like it being put in but once

it's there I love it - it is the only time I don't have to get up at night

to wee wee!!!!! A good night's sleep is heaven!!! I had neck surgery in

1983 post MVA (have a metal plate from C4-7) and the nurses all laughed at

me when they came in to take the catheter out a couple of days post surgery

and I complained - they said that had never happened before!!!

Judi,

With any surgery it's pretty standard to use a Foley cath (they

insert it when you are out, usually when you are intubated) although

they have you empty your bladder before they take you in to the

staging area. The intubation and cath are removed after surgery,

before you go to recovery so you don't even know what was there. As

far as nail polish (!) don't wear any. Although you do have socks on,

in the event they need to check for capillary refill they look at the

nailbeds of your fingers and toes for circulation problems.

It truly is a brief moment in time for the surgery. I was told to

take four deep breathes and then they were waking me up a minute

later!!(or so it seemed!) Good luck to you!

You don't get a catheter that I know about during the MGB, but if you

do, it's in and out while you are asleep.

Anyway, Lori, it's been 5 weeks since your surgery and it is

virtually

impossible for that to be the cause of a UTI this late.

Bladder infections are very common and caused by bacteria which can

get there in several ways, such as during wiping, or sex. Another

thing that is common is an allergy to latex -- using a condum during

sex will set it off if you're allergic to latex.
