, I'm reposting an old message from this list, in hopes that it might give

you some guidance in starting the diet.

Example Toddler Dietary Guidlines

hi all!!

i am still new to all this, but i have learned one thing... you

really need to be aware not only of what your child is eating, but

also how much and in what ratios.

i recall posting about concerns as to whether my son was getting too

much to eat. i got responses that he was too high in protein, as

reported by fitday.com. i went to fitday.com, but it was no help

(what was too high, too low of a particular measurement?). i spent

the first 2 months in the dark about balanced nutrition, and had a

lethargic 2 year old from day one on SCD.

now... i am happy to report that my husband and i finally got our

act together, and did a little reading. we saw that jake was in fact

not getting a balanced diet(although he was eating healthier than he

ever has), and looking back in jake's food journal, we could see

that his lethargy(i mean ~i can't even walk mom, i'm too tired~ type

lethargy) started as soon as we began SCD. that has all changed in

the past week.

here is what we learned:

we got toddler nutrient info. from our pediatrician's baby book:

Source: The Baby Book; Sears; Pg 248

1,000-1,300 calories per day average

Protein: 1 gram per pound per day

Ideal Balanced Nutrition:

50-55 percent carbohydrates

35-40 percent fats

10-15 percent proteins

Frequent Feedings are Best

we then got jake a fitday account(just fudge their age), and started

changing the quantity of the different foods jake eats. we got his

diet within the percentages listed above, and in no time, we had a

happy, energetic(but not hyper), bouncy little boy.

now... please note... i am not a nutritionist, and if i have

committed nutritional blasphemy in anything that i have written,

please let me know. however, this info has helped me tremendously,

and i wish i had read it sooner.

shannon.

mom to Jake: 2 yrs 3 mos old, ASD, GFCF/Feingold/SCD since july 04.
