[This is a repost of an email that appeared a long time ago on our

lists]

For many mothers of children with ASD,SCD might appear overwhelming at

first. Many moms are unable to get a good night rest because the child

wakes them up,they are unable to cook because the child needs constant

care,speech lessons,and social skills training.

One solution is to get extra help in cooking.Find some volunteers in the

community.Seek senior citizens or look for teens who want to do

community service.Go to the high school or senior center in your area.

Instead of paying lots of money for doctors, pay for someone to come for

2-5 hours a week to cook. There is a way to translate to a foreign

language all internet recipes in case you want to hire an immigrant.

Let us make a comparison to ABA or other intensive early

interventions, they require the parents to hire helpers for 40 hours a

week.SCD is just as powerful if not more and yet it requires only 2-5

extra hours a week for help.So it is very easy in comparison! When we

changed from GFCFSF to SCD ,the cooking was just as easy as GFCFSF. I

just made baked chicken, well steamed veggies and squash instead of

rice, chicken and salad for dinner and lunch.Breakfast remained the

same:pineapple mixed by Vita Mix.

But the great part was that I do not need to give my kids a zillion

supplements to make up for the malabsorption problem solved by the diet.

At first I refused to omit any supplements and continued with them for

months. We saw improvements with the diet when we used the supplements.

One day I got lazy and forgot about them and we are fine without them.

We also see improvements with the diet when we do not use the

supplements.

Every child is different;some children do better with additional

supplements.

All the best, Mimi

When this letter was originally posted another mother replied. Here is

her post. BTW,A's son recovered from ASD and was only language

delayed when we last heard from them.

HI there,

Mimi is absolutley right. I certainly do not spend any more time in the

kitchen doing SCD (as opposed to when I was working with the GFCF diet).

In fact, I spend less time. When we were GF'ing, my son wouldn't eat

fruit, veges or cheese. Now he eats these things, so snacks are easy.

With the other diet, snacks were THE most stressful thing. My food bill

is also lower with this diet (vs GFCF) because I am not having to run to

the health food store for baking powder, rice flour, specialty this,

specialty that....

I can shop at a regular store again. The only items I go to a health

food store for are natrual peanut butter and almond flour. Fruit, meat,

milk, cheese, veges - these are all staples, and lots of times they go

on sale. I am much happier with this diet, both in terms of results with

my autisitc son and my other children, and also because of the

practicalities.

For me, it is a much easier diet to implement than GFCF.

PS. The bonus to me is - I am losing wieght, and I have no problem

staying away from illegals. I have no desire to eat the stuff I used

to. The baked goods & yogurt are the ticket there. They satisfy the

need for carbs & sweets.
