Hey a,

I'm also in Houston and 10 weeks pregnant! My OB gave me chewables as

well. Duet. Is that the kind you have? I don't think they taste all

that great, but I'd rather not have to swallow a pill. I had the VBG,

so I'm not worried about absorbing, just getting it down. What I do to

get the chewables down without getting ill though is have a drink ready

to drink as soon as I start chewing... Not water, something with some

good taste. It doesn't take much, just enough to wash it down pretty

quickly...

PRENATAL VITAMINS

Hello group. I am new to this board. I am a 29 years old female who

lives in Houston Texas. I had the Duodenal Switch August 13th, 2003.

Everything went fine. Well now I am 10 weeks pregnant and was given

these chewable prenatal vitamins. They help to absorb. However they

taste nasty to me so evertime I take them I throw up. I might have to

switch the swallow type of pills. However, I wasn't for sure which

brand would be best for us post-op patients. Vitamins that are easily

absorbed through our new system. Does anyone have any good ideas?

Nice to meet everyone.

Congratulations, a!

I had a real problem with the prenatal vitamins too...There is an

awesome brand out there available by prescription...It is

called " Pregvit " ...you take one in the morning and one at night. They

separate the iron into the one dose. Some vitamins are not absorbed

as well with iron, so you take them in the eve.

The pills have been easy to swallow for me...and the best part is NO

yucky smell or taste to make you gag!

Take care, and congrats again,

30 weeks today!

Hi a,

I recognize your name from Dr. K's DS Friends List. Congrats on the

pregnancy.

Dr. K and my OB have me on 2 prenatals a day (store brand of Walmart)

plus another regular multi vitamin at night, plus ADEK's (have not

been taking those faithfully), 2400 calcium citrate, folic acid and B-

12 (I was deficient). Be sure to call Dawn and let them know you are

pregnant. They will follow you closely and are available to you,

still. I've emailed Dee several times and have gotten quick

responses and Dawn calls me monthly. They will want to follow you

closely as I believe you will be only pregnancy #6 at the office. :-)

Best of luck and take care.

Hello there. Thank you for your response. Are those chewables or the

big horse pills. The chewables I am on just don't taste good. I am

thinking of taking 3 Flinstones Multi Vitamins to equal the 1000mcg

of Folic Acid that will be needed. We will see how it works. Congrats

on your first baby. It is exciting isn't it. This is my first as well

and already had a scare over the weekend. I actually thought I had

miscarried because there was spotting associated with cramps. The

office wanted me in the next day (yesterday) so when they pulled baby

up on the ultrasound everything was fine. Talk about a nervous, bad

weekend that started the week with good news. Now if I can get over

this nausea and irritablility (plus headaches) I will be alright.

Hey Robin. Nice to talk with another Houstonian (although I can't

officially call myself that yet, hehe). Wow you and I are both right

on target at 10 weeks. Have you picked which hospital you would like

to be at. I actually forgot the name of those pills but I do know

they are heart shaped. I am actually thinking that I am better off

taking 3 Multi-Vitamin Flinstones (I think they taste good) to get my

1000 mcg of Folic Acid. I tried gulping down everything while chewing

those things but it is so strong that my husband laughs when I am

doing it because you would think I am on fear factor or something

(you know when they eat that horrible stuff) because I make all kinds

of faces and noises just to get that pill down. Hehe!

Wow you are 30 weeks already. Congrats to you. Will this be your

first? My only concern is finding a brand that my new system will be

able to absorb. I might just have to muster these chewables and take

it like a woman..hehe! Luckily we only have to take 1.

the swallow pills won't be absorbed very much, that's the problem, my dr says

nothing over hte size of am MnM. i'm taking chewables also. i tell ya tho, i

have flintstone type vitamins i was taking before pregnacy and i looked at

those, they are alsmost better for yout hen the prenates, so i take them mainly.

my iron is fine and all, so i don't need the excess amount of iron...but if

those work better for you, rather then throwing up all the time, invest in

flintstones, or ones you can take...just my opinion, good luck!

Hey a,

I'm not having that many problems taking my prenatal's so I don't know

what else to tell you. But Flinstones sounds good to me. That's what I

was taking before and they taste a LOT better.

About the hospital - I will be at The Women's Hospital since my OB is

part of the OB/GYN Assoc. that are the doctor's housed in The Women's

Hospital. I've never been inside, but it's supposed to be the best for

this sort of thing. :-)

contributing factor to my daughter's ASD?

Hi Cara,

Please don't get too worried - the jury's still out on this one - I

have read more than once about prenatals having too much iron,

possibly harmful levels and ASD kids as poor excreters of excess

metals, toxins etc.

I was quite diligent in taking my prenatal vitamins with my first

pregnancy (Cameron - ASD), didn't eat any fish and ate tons of carbs

and NO PROTEIN and with my 2nd pregnancy I ate lots of fish, way more

meats and I was careful about my sugar intake (for fear of weight

gain! sheesh!?!) and the prenatals made me feel so sick, so I ditched

them. My daughter, Mia is such a different child. Who knows - maybe in

my case this meant something? But hindsight is 20/20 - so I can't, nor

should I dwell on it.

I hope I didn't worry you needlessly.

Lynn - Mommy to Cameron 3.9 (ASD) and Mia Jean (20 months)
