Guest guest
Dear Kim, I hope I can offer you a little hope and support. You sound so overwhelmed... and I don't blame you. Starting the entire family on SCD... and yourself, as well, since you are pregnant... is a huge undertaking! What's happening with your daughter sounds quite typical. I suspect she's going through some die-off symptoms... and may not feel terribly well. This would affect her appetite some, I'm sure. This is a pretty big deal for her... not having some of the foods her body was used to, and adjusting to the new foods. I know it's distressing for a parent to see their child refusing food.... but be careful, and try not to let your distress and anxiety rub off on your daughter. They are so sensitive to our emotions... I think sometimes that can add to the stress of the entire situation. These initial symptoms really should be temporary... although I'm sure it's upsetting to you right at the moment. I suspect she is detoxing... and might benefit from epsom salts baths and even activated charcoal, if you can figure out a way to get it down. Weight loss in the beginning is not unusual.... but should be very temporary. I sort of think of it as shedding of toxins that have been stored in the body. Some of it might be water weight, as well... and possibly connected to detoxing. That's just my take on it... I'm not sure if I'm technically right, so don't read that as " SCD gospel " or anything. I'd be a *little* concerned about the idea of starting SCD while pregnant, only because this initial period does mean sort of stirring up the toxins in the body. I hope you're doing this with the guidance of your physician? I think I remember reading that you were, in previous messages. I might have suggested easing into SCD for an expectant mom... slowly, over time, rather than the usual intro phase and total transition to SCD foods. If you feel really unwell, please talk to your doctor. Epsom salts baths might be a good thing for you, too.... it could be that a great deal of the tiredness and stress you feel right now are associated with bacterial die-off and detoxing. It's amazing the impact this diet can have on the body... and the toxins released by dying gut pathogens can really make you feel bad for a while. Please be sure to go read the section on www.pecanbread.com on " Transitioning a child to SCD " , if you haven't already. It's under the " Food Preparation " link. Lots of good tips there. I'm sure other parents will be letting you know of their similar experiences... and that things really WILL get better. Take it EASY! my best to you.... Patti, mom to Katera Very concerned - need some guidance Hi Everyone; Our whole family has been dairy-free SCD for 10 days. I am very concerned about my 2 yo daughter. She has not eaten anything but sneaky veggie pancakes (squash is the veg) and pear sauce for the past 3 days. I have tried everything I can think of to get her to eat other foods. If I approach her with a bowl of soup she immediately has a fit and refuses to eat anything. Have tried to sneak avocado in her pear sauce and pancake and she refuses to eat it. She was underweight when we started this diet. She now looks skeletal and has dark circles under her eyes. It's painful for me to look at her - very upsetting. I would like to continue with dairy free SCD for our entire family but I wonder if I'm doing the right thing. My eldest daughter is severely autistic and needs dairy free SCD. I am pregnant and have been advised that this diet is the best thing for my developing baby (although I've lost 4 pounds this past week). My husband has always had issues with wheat and dairy and probably needs this diet. My 2 yo is probably high end ASD - considering her immediate family history she would probably benefit from this diet. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I'm physically and emotional exhausted and ready to throw in the towel :-( Kim Day 10 dairy free SCD
Guest guest
Hi Patti; Thanks for replying to my post! Yes, I know what you mean about not letting your own anxiety rub off onto your child. Feeding time has been a bundle of anxious energy around her since starting the diet. I have to get a handle on that too. Not easy when your child is wasting away and refusing perfectly tasty food ;-) Good idea about the epsom salt baths and charcoal. I'll see if I can get her to take a charcoal tomorrow. Yes, I am doing dairy free SCD under the guidance of my daughter's DAN doc. He's not personally my doc though - my own doc would have a fit if she knew about dairy free SCD. But she's a mainstream doc - got milk? I am going to add more food items to my diet now. Was sticking to stage one and two but I think I need more food to eat. Thanks again for the advice! Sincerely, Kim 10 days dairy-free SCD for whole family Re: Very concerned - need some guidance Dear Kim, I hope I can offer you a little hope and support.
