Guest guest
Oh Holly, what a sad story.. I run across kids that seem to have no one to care about them sometimes, too, and it just breaks my heart. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could just take them home with us and love them like our own? I know that isn't possible, but it would be nice if they could get put into a loving home, instead of going back to parents that don't care. Joey will be in my prayers tonight. Deb in IL >> When I taught reading improvement to kids in Connecticut I had many children who came from dire circumstances. Many were unclean and poorly dressed and shared some of what went on in their homes--very sad. Sadly, their parents were for the most part uninterested in being involved enough with their schooling to learn how they could help at home. The little girls would hang on me, " soft " my clothes, saying how pretty they were, that I smelled good, etc. During story time they would sit right at the end of my nose. I wanted to wrap them in my arms and not let go. There is a growing group in teaching these days who feel that they just can't be demonstrative with their students because of the litigation crazy society we live in. While my brain understands this, I would never stop the hugs or affection- It is what made the job so enjoyable. We have no idea how much a hug might mean to a child. Guest guest
Boy, do I know what you mean!!!! I teach middle school in Cleveland and it is very sad. I had one adorable boy in my class and at the end of the year I did not have one grade in my gradebook for him - he prefered to goof off all the time. So, I called him aside a few days before school was out and had a little heart to heart with him - told him that I was very upset with him (he was failing all of his courses, not just mine) and how this really upset me because he was so obviously bright and could do the work easily if he chose to - also how cute he was and funny. All of a sudden he was standing there with tears running down his face and it occurred to me that NO ONE had every told him anything like that before. We are, at that age, what people say we are and no one cared enough about him to tell him that he was smart and cute. So, we had several other little talks where I reinforced what I had told him and he practically became my shadow, helping me with everything. I told him that he would be doing some maturing over the summer and that when we came back in the fall I expected him to do his assignments (and I would help if I could) etc. etc. I tried to call him a week or so ago but he has no phone. We can't save them all but we sure can try!!!
