Guest guest
Hi Antionette! I wouldn't be surprised if you guys had metal issues. It is a BIG, BIG, BIG part of ASD, and since you think ya'll are ASD . . . well, it probably is a contributing part to your problems. It is a major part of ours. Apparently SCD does chelate metals from the body over time, but it does not chelate them from the brain. Only ALA (a chelator) can cross the blood/brain barrier to grab the metals up there. But chelation is a very tricky treatment (one that we are doing), and it really needs to be done under the supervision of a doctor. I do not advise putting off seeing a DAN. The DAN is going to help you make sense of all this. It sounds like ya'll have lots of issues and that you think there are a lot of different things affecting your conditions. It is a good idea to get your kids into a DAN who is familiar with these problems. That way you won't be doing as much " guessing " and doing more " healing. " A DAN should be able to help guide you as you figure out whether SCD is enough or if other treatments are needed to supplement your recovery. BUT DEFINITELY STAY WITH SCD no matter what! You asked if you should remove dairy. The DAN will help you figure that one out too, but most ASD people have to remove dairy for a least a while until they heal further. Jaquelyn McCandless, author of Children With Starving Brains, writes: " For some children who do not respond to the GF/CF/SF diet and continue to have gut problems, parents have gone on to implement even more restricted diets. One of these, the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) is based on Elaine Gottschall's book, " Breaking the Vicious Cycle, " originally intended for those suffering from Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Celiac Disease, IBD, and IBS. . . . . At the present time, some ASD parents are transitioning their children from GF/CF/SF to SCD with generally good and some exceptional results. Adjustments have had to be made for the autism population, as many parents found they could not rapidly give their children dairy and honey until after a period of several months or more on the SCD. " Our family just got our first bottle of SCDophilus (SCD legal probiotic), and we will be testing it out within the next week. We didn't get the Kirkman variety because our nutritionist says that the strains are not very strong and, therefore, not very effective. I have a friend who tried the Kirkman variety for a year and a half as well and didn't see any improvement from it. Anyway, all of this is -- obviously -- just my opinion. But I really think you will benefit from seeing a DAN. Please keep your appointment. I have never heard anyone regret getting their kids into one of these doctors. And the earlier your kids get the treatments they need, the more likely a full recovery is. The older ones have more difficulty recovering because their bodies have been " disrupted " for so long that they are accustomed to functioning that way. Change is slower for them and not usually as significant (although some still do make remarkable recoveries). I encourage you to not waste time and get your kids into this DAN ASAP! Cordially, Jeni Lynn (gastrointestinal problems) SCD 1 month mom to Margeaux, 6 yr. (heavy metal toxicity, ADD, gastrointestinal problems) , 3 yr. (heavy metal toxicity, at risk for ADD, gastrointestinal problems) Elle, 18 mo. (heavy metal toxicity, was at risk for autism but no more, leaky gut, eczema) SCD 3 months Chelation Questions? Did research on heavy metals. Very disturbing in light of problems family has had,and are continueing to have. Although will not deny doing better than ever before thanks to only SCDIET/enzymes/supplements Does the SCDiet cause Chelation of heavy metals? Should we wait to see DAN doctor? Do you have to take SCD safe dairy out of the SCDiet to achieve this? I read somewhere that sugar, dairy and grain have to be taken out of diet...SCDIET dose this (but would have to stop the yogurt)...is this true? Antoinette and husband want to know. (day 39/Celiac...trying to help family and KiKi/22 month old, and are ASD symptoms) For information on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, please read the book _Breaking the Vicious Cycle_ by Elaine Gottschall and read the following websites: http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info<http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/\ > and http://www.pecanbread.com<http://www.pecanbread.com/>
