Guest guest
Hi, I am returning to try SCD again with my almost 5 yr old son- we tried the diet last summer with him. He actually did very well on the brief trial we did, but I stopped for several reasons: 1. My daughter did very poorly on the diet- I was using eggs and bananas heavily and they seem to be fixed intolerances for her. (they make her vomit or have stomach cramps) Since I was homeschooling at the time, it was easier to feed them both the same thing and it had to kind of " match " . Now that she is in school I can vary their diets to meet their dietary needs more easily. 2. My son's allergy tests came back after starting SCD. We paid extra out of pocket to have Immunolabs testing done and it showed high reactions to all nuts but walnuts plus pumpkin and coconut plus 20 something other foods- I felt it would be hard to do SCD with these restrictions. 3. Reading the posts on the list about die offs and terrible reactions even after months on the diet just plain scared me! However, at the time we tried SCD last year most grains bothered my son in some way. Now, he has gotten to the point where every grain or grain type food except buckwheat gives him hives and wheezing but buckwheat gives him stomach pain and diarrhea. Over last summer he developed asthma. After a visit to an ND where she analyzed his blood and found a horrible looking large parasite among other things, we took him off of sugar, potatoes and put him on heavy probiotics, olive leaf extract and a paracleanse (which I had to really reduce or he would wheeze terribly). He came off of all asthma meds and improved greatly after just the first few days of these changes. Now, we are back to square one though- having to give claritin and singulair to keep the wheezing and hives to a minimum and to be able to feed his grains to him. I think it has been very short sighted of me to trust what a lab says he is reacting to instead of looking what he is truly reacting to right in front of my face. The lab said all grains were fine for him but corn (that had an IgE reaction). It also said several other foods were OK that give him obvious reactions. Now, if he has to be on these meds just to eat grains, why not try him back on the nut flours and eggs and pumpkin again where I never saw an obvious reaction but took away trusting the lab work?? He is now down to such a restricted diet and seeming to develop new allergies every few weeks, that SCD is actually more of a liberating diet for him so I think he will enjoy it and that it may finally heal his gut! Anyway, this very long ramble is all to say hello again and I hope to truly stick this out this time for my son's sake. Janet- GF one year this Easter Sunday! multiple allergies and asthma as a child which I " outgrew " ; dx with IBS 7 yrs; DQ7 and DQ8 genes Son- almost 5 yrs old; multiple food allergies and intolerances; speech delay; double DQ7 genes; GF 2 years; dairy and soy free 4 years; taking methyl B12 shots for abt 1 1/2 yrs now Daughter- age 7; DQ7 and DQ6 genes; GF 2 years; egg, banana and peanut free; extremely low dairy and soy after 2 years without; supposed to be taking methyl B12 shots but keeps waking up at night when I try to give her!
