Guest guest
Hi, guys... Well, I've been trying SCD for almost 2 weeks now (not that that's a long time, but...) My daughter Phoebe, who we were starting to get worried about because she had been exhibiting some signs of ASD, hand flapping, stimming, echolalia, but she is MUCH more social than Wesley who has been diagnosed with PDD-NOS. He is very high functioning...I believe he actually has Aspberger's, but he is definitely on the spectrum. Anyway, I DO have a point here The route I have chosen is to start substituting SCD legal foods for the foods they already eat and then transition to the intro diet later. They are completely SCD legal now. Phoebe has been like a classic case of someone beginning to recover while on SCD. She has been using her words more and whining less (except NOW, she's really cranky! She's had what I think are die off poops every day for the past 3 or so...dark green, loose, and FOUL!) stimming less, but the most noticeable thing is that she is quickly expanding her food repertoire. Yesterday she ate 2 egg whites for dinner! She's never eaten a whole egg before in her LIFE! She said " I want to eat egg " and not wanting to waste eggs considering the number of eggs used in these recipes, I said, do you want some cheese? (which she usually eats with no problem) No, I want egg. Do you want cake? (the cashew butter bread I made yesterday) No, I want EGG! So I made her some eggs...poached in the microwave. She ate 'em all up! (she didn't like the yolk, but neither do I, so...) My concern is that Wesley is not doing nearly as well with the eating. I try to make pancakes and waffles, he won't try them if they don't look like eggos. (He just can't leggo his eggo...ha ha!) It's really tough to get him to try any of the breads I make...he ate the pecan bread I made using the basic bread recipe in BTVC, originally gobbled it all up, but the last time I made it a couple of days ago, he totally shunned it! Made a basic muffin recipe and he liked that, but he has been increasingly picky about taking " crust " off everything...even muffins! Never was like this before. So the only things he is eating are bananas, peanut butter balls (loves peanut butter, but I haven't found a good bread yet) and MAYBE those muffins. This IS a bit expanded since before starting the diet because at that point he had eliminated EVERYTHING except eggos. Seems like he is slowly working in reverse adding back the foods that he cut out in reverse order. My concern is that since he is not making progress the way Phoebe is, does that mean the diet is not going to work for him, or should I just remain patient and realize that every kid is different? Just need some advice and encouragement. Thanks, guys. --Mel
