Guest guest
Roja or Rojo do mean " red, " as in " color de roja, " or de " rojo, " if it is a masculine noun, but the reason it means " red " is that so many roses are some shade of red; it is an archaic word and has never been up graded in Spanish. Spanish in its way is as silly as English. The other word in Spanish which can also mean " red " is even sillier, " colorado, " as in " color de rojo, " which is how the state of Colorado got its name. Makes no sense to me. I guess they were really impressed with roses and with sunsets on canyons and mountains and we are left with the result! Es la historia de espanol. Sorry, could not put in the tilde! My husband's last name was Steinkellner. Now in Austrian German one could debate that one forever; I assumed that it meanst " stone-carrier " as in builder, but that family had gezillion theories about it. Our daughters married out of it and our son changed it anyway--they were all tired of 12 letters! Love, n the Red
