Isnt it weird how problems can manifest themselves. I think there is definitely

something going on between the mind and stomach. Because I know that emotional

turmoil sends my stomach into a fit. Sometimes I think its best to just tell the

mind " ok you had your say now calm down Lisbeth " Yeah I talk to my mind. I find

that I am a wonderful listener. Plus I am so captivating! But seriously I think

you have some good physical therapy going with the kitties they provide you with

some peace. Now I want a pet gosh nabbit!

I'm wondering if there isn't a hidden infection like Amy had-

hopefully my barium swallow will show something. I spoke to my

endocrinologist yesterday about the anxiety (because yep, I have an

emotional gut & was afraid I wasn't helping) and he's changed my

antianxiety meds.. either they're working or I've just become numb to

stuff (lol.. riiight), because today I feel better emotionally.. and

that helps a LOT. Plus I have the fat tomcat footrest to play with

.. Thanks for the compliment.. I'll tell Shadow, but Noggy already

thinks he's the cat's whiskers, lol.

Hi Liane,

I lurk here often but this is my first post. Maybe someone has

already mentioned this but you might want to be checked for C.diff

(Colustrium Difficle - sp?). Flagyl is used to treat it but

sometimes C.Diff can be resistant to it and then you have to use the

much more expensive ($250.00 -- just ask me about it - Ouch!)

Vaccodin. But, after a 10 day round with this drug things cleared up

and are back to normal for me. Just a thought.

In any case -- I hope you a feeling better soon.

Hi Jen..

They tested for Clostridium Difficile (same family as the bug

causing botulism), and verbally told me that the results were

negative.. but I asked for a copy of those labs to see for myself..

I've been on Flagyl already, first time 5 days, second time 7 days..

now once a day.. I'm hoping, praying, & crossing my fingers that this

is the downhill slide. Next step allegedly is cipro.. hopefully I get

to miss out on the lovely vancomycin regime- that stuff is rough!

Thanks hun!

I think this is Vancomycin (generic)---I had c-diff pt's and it was

miserable!!! Vanco works great.

Liane--when you mentioned about the anxiety meds--did you say this

helped?

It made me think of what I read in the many vast volumes of posts

somwhere---

about how the vagus nerve which runs the entire length of the

ailementary canal ==esophagus to the pooper--and in the DS it is

severed in 3 places-- Some people, with the swelling and healing of

the tissues, this nerve is overly irritated--the anxiety meds may

help it settle, and a " smooth muscle " relaxant med, may also help.

I've been stewing this for a couple days--esp. since I believe you

posted that the cultures came back ok. If the barium thing comes back

normal this may be a consideration--some people just suffer it out

until this nerve heals--6 months--or perhaps these other things may

ease the discomfort.

I may be out in right( or is it left?) feild--I get get my quips

goofed up. But may be worth a try.

I'm so sorry you're going through all this. It almost makes me feel

guilty since I'm feeling so great now.

No - I don't think the vagus nerve is touched AT ALL in the DS surgery... at

least this was what I was told by Dr. Gagner.

Hull - what have you read about this?

Hmmn.. never thought of that.. esp. since I never got nauseous until

last weeked (vomited yes- felt nauseated, no). It better find

something.. the stomach pains are getting stronger.. course, with the

new anxiety meds, it doesn't seem as worrisome..(kidding- will be

calling tomorrow to see about moving up the barium swallow). But I

will ask about this if nothing shows on my results..

Liane

The vagus nerve doesnt necesarrily have to be directly " touched " to

become irritated. It's often suspect when someone has extended nausea

after an abdominal surgery. (such as my sister after her gallbladder

surgery, nausea lasted 6 weeks) I'm not sure about the diarrhea,

but sounds very plausable to me. JMHO Meli

I asked Dr. Elariny about this when I went for my pre-op consult. He

said that there are two branches of the vagus nerve in the stomach,

and that one of the branches is removed in the resection (the first

part of the BPD/DS.

interesting -- Dr. Gagner said the vagas nerve wasn't even touched or removed
