Guest guest
Antoinette, Well our son is Autistic so it is like a puzzle trying to figure out what is best for him. We needed to add in ABA Therapy and Speech Therapy. Then it took quite a few months for our Noah to stop vomiting up old meals that were never digested (sorry if that's too much info) and to stop the night terrors completely. He was sooo sick. This continued to occur and gradually decreased. Enzymes helped, but it just took time on the diet too. Time to heal. For him the diet was not enough, it is the basis of his recovery, but we needed antifungals to help with getting rid of the yeast and we are still struggling with it. Without antifungals Noah's stools get yucky again. By yucky I mean undigested, foul smelling, very soft. We cannot seem to get rid of that nasty stuff. Every time our son goes off of one antifungal it is only a matter of time before he will need to go on another to help fight the yeasty beasties. That yeast causes a slow regression back to his old behaviors of poor eye contact, oppositional behavior, not able to adjust to new situations, not being interested in toys, night terrors and yucky stools. These make for tough days and nights, and the regression has been so gradual in the past that I haven't always realized what is happening. Then we put him back on the antifungal and our sweet little boy's personality emerges again. Sometimes it is hard to distinguish between normal terrible twos and yeast regression. Though it is getting easier for me. There were also some infractions on our part along the way. I discovered Tropicana OJ with Calcium was illegal, my hubby and I were giving Noah bananas that were not ripe enough yet, things like that. I am being educated by this forum and all the smart people that contribute. I feel I need to read as much as possible as the Doctor's definitely do not have all the answers. When you've come as far as we have with Noah it is so difficult to see any regression back into that autistic shell. But every child is different and you may not have any of these difficulties. You seem very educated and like you are constantly searching to learn more. Just keep that up. We have not had any classic SCD regressions as most due. Although recently I think Noah may have had some die off symptoms (incredibly cranky and winy and not very interested in his toys). It is hard to prepare for set backs as everyone's are different. You are a good person and a great mom. You have overcome so much. I am glad you are all feeling better. My husband and I are trying to go all SCD ourselves, gradually. It is tough to keep up with the SCD supply of food so that we are not tempted to cheat. I do not get much help cooking from my hubby as he works many hours and we work opposite shifts. It is so easy to just revert back to the SAD. Though I have to say that the SAD that we eat is healthier than most, because of all the knowledge I have gained from my son's illness and my ongoing interest in nutrition. We at least eat a very minimal amount of processed food. I am hoping to go back to school and study Nutrition when my son is older and maybe doesn't need me so much, so that I can help other children like him. -Kim Mom to Noah 2 ½ yrs old ASD SCD since Feb 2005 From: Bunce Sent: Tuesday, April 11, 2006 11:56 AM To: Witkowicz, [DPYUS] Subject: Re: have a question/Digest Number 2353 Kim said: ................There have been set backs, not every day is a good one, but when I think of where we were a year ago it amazes me............... These children are so amazing. They are so full of life, it is all just hidden behind their sick guts....... Dear Kim or to any who can explain, Oh, it is wonderful....I am so happy we stopped this monster (I guess what would be more appropriate is " these little monsters " ) inside all of us! You among many would understand! Isn't it nice to cry happy tears of joy and relief for a change! Too many nights sleepless, too many doctor visits...hospitalizations....all we pray gone.....we hope..... a thing in the past! Have a question...what where the set backs like??????....I would like to know before they happen so we are prepared. We have already had a few....just wanted to know what the first year looked like for you guys. Elaine in the BTVC book warns of a set back that occurs at around the two to three month mark...we are getting close. Anybody, please tell us more about this????? Thanks, Antoinette (SCD day 49 entire family healing from Celiac, ASD, ADHD, ADD and more...never felt better and to think we have a ways to go! )
