Guest guest
>>> Just brainstorming: Is she on digestive enzymes? I'm thinking along this line also. If she isn't taking enzymes, that might be a good next step...particularly before taking more foods out of the diet. I had quite a few discussions with Elaine on this point. A major feature of SCD is the special yogurt. A lot of the cases in SCD where there was great success included the yogurt. In fact, many people said the real healing didn't happen until they added in the yogurt. Even one of the first breakthrough cases of autism using SCD. What sets SCD apart from just another restrictive diet is the proactive healing yogurt. Food eliminations do not necessarily heal the gut tissue. The damage may be slowed down or stopped, but you are sitting there with an injured gut...just sitting there. When you put in a proactive healing element, then you kick-start and drive healing. Proactive healing items are probiotics, digestive enzymes, maybe zinc, maybe essential fatty acids, etc. Elaine used to say how surprised she was that only in autism where people so scared of dairy (casein). The issue of gut health in autism is a moving target, so the casein issue was one of those issues in flux. Alot of what was thought to be true (i.e. casein is poison and no autistic person should be within 20 miles of it) have been proven false. There are now lots of experiences where a person with autism did much better with casein in the diet than not. Each person is different. There were lots of posts in the beginning of this group on how the yogurt was healing, just as adding in digestive enzymes and probitics are healing (no duh there...the special yogurt contains live probiotic cultures and enzymes along with minerals and other healing factors). It's interesting to note also that many people with autism who had problems with casein/dairy in general did not with the special yogurt. Actually, they were thriving on the yogurt. And there were those on SCD that added digestive enzymes to see a jump in improvement. There is a parallel here. Soooo, if you haven't tried the SCD yogurt, that's something to consider. It's a whole-food source of nourishment. If you are nervous of the casein, consider an enzyme with DPP IV in it. There are quite a few available which work just fine, and there are about a half dozen more coming out this year. Here is a list: http://www.enzymestuff.com/dietsgfcf.htm#11 You might also want to consider an enzyme product with carbohydrate digesting enzymes. With digestive enzymes, try one bottle of what you are interested in. If you don't see any results, try one bottle of something else. One bottle should tell you if it will be beneficial for you. If you have no idea what to start with, you can try Lacto initially. It has lots of extra enzymes for the total dairy compound as well as lots of carb enzymes. Then explore others as you go. There are lots of good broad-spectrum products available. Thanks for your patience with this, and best wishes for whatever you decide to pursue. .
