Dear All,

Sharada (6 yowcf) is having cough, cold , sneezing & running nose at

the same time. She can not go to school, has some fever also. Her

sputum culture came normal just last week so doctors are not going

for any antibiotics at present. Insted she is on Bricanyl and

Mucolyte with some paracitamol for fever.

Now there is something interesting we observed last night. Her mother

was taking steam for her face and Sharada also wanted to imitate mom.

She felt very good after inhaling steam for 10 minutes. May be it

cleared some mucus and it had soothing effect on her throat. But I

wonder how safe (she had PA before) and actually useful to inhale

steam. Anyway she is taking ventolin nebulizer.

Thanks

If you boil clean water and place it in a clean bowl for her to inhale the steam

then it shouldn't be bad for her at all.

Dear Shrikant,

My son has cf and is 23 1/2 years old. When he gets a cold or has

sinus congestion or when he notices increased chest congestion with

thickened mucus, he boils some water, pours it into a clean glass

bowl, then adds 1 to 2 drops of tea tree essential oil or eucalyptus

essential oil. Then he inhales the steamy vapors for about 5 minutes

or until the water cools.

If he has a bad cold (which is rare) he follows this treatment every

night for about three nights, and he also greatly increases his

vitamin C dose (he usually takes 1,000 mg. per day but during a cold

or CF flare up, he increases vitamin C to 3,000 or more per day in

divided doses.) Sucking on a zinc lozenge at the very first sign of

cold symptoms can help kill the cold virus at the back of the throat.

Tea tree and eucalyptus essential oils are safe and natural; they have

antibiotic properties and should only be used externally, not taken

internally.

Tea tree oil also has antifungal and antiparasitical properties. My

son used these oils and got rid of aspergillus and Stenotrophonas

maltophilia, and altered his mucoid PA so it became sensitive to

antibiotics again.

Some people with CF feel increased inflammation after prolonged use of

eucalyptus so it shouldn't be used more than 3 days. Eucalptus is an

ingredient found in Vick's Vapor Rub here in the US. The scent helps

quickly opens stuffy noses!
