Guest guest
Heidi, I am glad that the doctor is being so thorough. I am tired just reading about all the tests you are having. that is good that you blood sugars are stable. You said, " My insulin has been adjusted to what appears to be a perfect level for me now. I do inject it right before bedtime, but then always have a snack afterward. " What insulin are you injecting at bedtime? Humalog? or Lantus? I was also wondering if you knew about these new diabetic bars that you eat at bedtime and they do a slow release of carbohydrates throughout the night for people with nighttime lows? I'll try and locate the name of them. Blessings, Karyn , RN Executive Director, PAI Symposium August 28 & 29, 2003

I've tried the diabetic bars, Jeannine was nice enough to post the information on those on the diabetes support group site that we both belong to. They are called " Extend " and they really work well for most people....alas, but wouldn't you know it, not me! I got some in the mail, free, and tried them two different nights, and still had hypos. Jeannine uses them quite frequently and has good results with them. My insulin dosage has been lowered since I last tried them, so I may give them another try. I had another hypo last night, well, actually early this morning, even though I had a carbs and protein snack after my bedtime injection. I may just lower that insulin another unit and see if this helps. My daytime levels are really reasonable, as long as I make concessions for exercise. Any form of exercise brings me down fast, and I really have to keep my eye on it. It's especially worrisome with all the running around I've been doing to get to doctor's appointments, shop, etc. You wouldn't think it would make that much difference, but I seem to have a very fast metabolism in that regard, and if I make a quick run through the grocery or do half an hour's housework, I'll be in a hypo before I know it. Thanks for the reminder about the diabetic bars, this may be a good time to try them again. BTW, my 14 day average is 106, and 30 is 112......so things are getting better!
